In Age of Empires IV, I strongly recommend adding a shortcut key for the mini-map, similar to the Tab key in PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS, which instantly opens a detailed map. This map should provide clear alerts when villagers are under attack and allow features like setting cavalry paths or placing markers for teammates.
Additionally, this could prevent frustrating moments—like losing 100 spearmen to castle fire due to clumsy controls or having countless villagers slaughtered by knights in a split-second oversight. Many players quit the game because of such stress-inducing mechanics. Unlike Warcraft III, where micro-management is easier due to smaller unit counts (and why it remains hugely popular, especially in China), AoE IV’s large-scale battles demand better tools to reduce unnecessary frustration. A smarter mini-map would make gameplay smoother and more enjoyable, keeping players engaged rather than overwhelmed.
This has been a critical flaw in the game since its release—one I’ve been thinking about for years. Even now, with the game in a polished state, professional players still make these mistakes regularly in tournaments and ladder matches, let alone casual players who suffer even more. If this can’t be implemented in the current version, then it must be a core feature in Age of Empires V. I don’t want this suggestion buried in a general “What should AoE IV improve?” thread—it deserves its own discussion. **Let’s vote and push for this change together!
