Survivalist looks at various pathing problems in the game right now. Some of the lowlights:
units not even walking in a straight line when their path is unobstructed (2:40)
units not even walking in a straight line when given an unobstructed path along grid lines!
tasking units to the same exact location several times has inconsistent and unexpected behavior
units change formation on their own, without formation button or hotkey pressed (13:20)
units move around long distances from changing formation (16:00)
wildly different behavior when going a path from A to B as opposed to from B to A
pathing overall much worse than earlier versions of the game (tested against HD Edition)
Bonus: a new and easy desync setup
Overall it feels like there are always just attempts to fix the current “hot” pathing problem (stop micro too strong, attack move too strong, regrouping intolerably bad, …) without properly evaluating how it affects the rest of the system
I don’t know if it’s just me but I feel like pathing especially went bad after they rolled out the new algorithm that replaced the legacy one. For most of the time last year, the legacy code was still active in Multiplayer whereas in Singleplayer they already tested the new one.
I notice that the staggered formation becoming much worse to use as I imagine the formation the formation is getting smaller, turns out it was because the unit keep getting into line formation.
After the Chronicles announcement patch, I also notice other thing, that if you have a multiple monk selected, and click convert on enemy unit outside the monk range, then remove one monk one by one to convert other unit, the monk will stop randomly and only some go to convert the enemy units.
