Discuss Swiss Confederation
It doesnt work for me. This civ doesnt show on my list of civilisations when I download this mod. Even when I relaunch my game. Am I the only one to have this trouble ?
Alright, got to try the civ. Got got at game start so can confirm that the civ has unique gameplay.
Kinda.
Anyways, let’s elaborate.
-
Civ theme is the anthem lol. Guess it works.
-
Are the Älplers just Merchants with Pilgrim skins? I mean vills costing gold does give you an unique start… except the dutch already do have that, so…
-
Banks being available doesn’t help to the just dutch clone allegations.
-
Houses are super expensive, which yeah I get it, they trickle coin, but since you already have banks it doesn’t really lead to anything interesting imo.
-
Now here’s the real twist, they have a single building for infantry and cavalry. The Academy! Which… looks like a Circus tent, I guess the Swiss military is composed of clowns or something.
-
The unit roster was super punishing, which funnily enough was what made this civ play a lot different from usual, no taverns, Artillery Foundry worked as normal, the Academy only trained Pavisiers, yes same as Italian ones, Reisläufers, Swiss Guards and Hochreiters. Also Swiss Pikemen were unlocked upon reaching Fortress, at any rate, super punishing. Oh yeah, you also had Muskets with half health from the Town Center (and insane malus against vills, so at least that was accounted for.)
-
There indeed are several units with custom voice lines… I don’t know how you unlock them though, I only got one from an Age up. Most of the units used the vanilla voice lines, mostly german.
-
Homecity is a mess as well, you do NOT have access to most european cards like the readme said, military unit shipments were at a premium.
-
There are indeed a few custom unit skins (if you ever find the custom units) But most units are just recycled from vanilla and there’s little if any custom art in 2D, no new unit portraits or anything of the sort.
I mean hats off, there was real and honest effort into making a custom civ that’s something beyond just a 5 minute asset flip. There’s a lot of novice pitfalls and not that many unique ideas all things said, but the heart is there.
I’m so sorry, there was an error with version 1.1, this should hopefully be fixed now!
I must agree with you, the Swiss civ is very similar to the Dutch… first thing I could think of was banks. I did my best to keep them as distinct from the Dutch as possible (with the Protettore, lodges, etc.), but unfortunately the Dutch have a few mechanics that really fit to the Swiss civ as well. The anthem is fitting, I think. The Älplers are almost exactly merchants but they’re better at combat and they have a hidden +10% gather rate improvement for all coin sources. As for the art assets, I am a solo hobby dev… I don’t have the skills or budget to make or use custom models so I do my best to reuse other assets creatively. The same goes for the voicelines. I simply don’t have a very large pool of Swiss people willing to record voicelines for this… The ReadMe file was a mistake, that’s not supposed to be there. My bad The custom unit skins refers to a new texture for the model of the Royal carabinier used for the Reisläufer unit. Finally the unit roster:
I’ve been working on this mod for months, constantly balancing and testing with a friend. We came to the balancing concept to make the Swiss units very high quality, but expensive. Switzerland is intentionally bad in the early game, but you’ll find the units scale very, very well. In addition the unique Swiss minutemen alternative, the Protettore Alpino do start with half Hitpoints, something that needed to be implemented as the Swiss rush was very broken, but they heal over time and shadow-tech. Contrary to what you said the Hochreiter cannot be trained from the academy, that would be the Grünspecht which is a weak raiding cavalry unit. Generally all Swiss artillery, cavalry and navy units are intentionally sub par in order to encourage an infantry heavy play style (Also Switzerland doesn’t have a coastline, hence the weak navy). There are a handful of new Swiss shipments btw, some of them really quite unique. I did dial down the mod description a bit, I may have been a bit overzealous when I first wrote that… I hope you can still enjoy playing the mod, a new patch is already up with a new unit!
PS: If you have any suggestions for improving or fixing those ‘novice pitfalls’ I’d be happy to hear, I am indeed still a novice… Thanks!
Edit: I just noticed you said there’s little to no custom art, where I agreed with a few other points you made this is simply false. There’s a new native alliance, several upgrades at the capitol, and several shipments – all with unique and new 2d icon art.
