Hello. Ive been getting this “tampering detected” message ingame in aoe2 for a while now. I open the game, it sometimes gives me a message on the way in saying it has detected 3 party software.
I have not installed any 3 party/cheater software off ANY kind. This issue started out off nowhere. I have tryed to reinstall the game many times, ive tryed deleting the game files… with no succes.
The message “tampering has been detected” appears in the right corner off the screen once i enter the game menu. All the taps are grayed out and does not work (multiplayer, skirmish, etc.)
I also play aoe 4.
This is a picture off the message i get opening the game. "A running process may be interfering with correct operation of AoE2 De… etc.
Can someone please help me
thanks
Maybe check you don’t have any Anti Virus software causing problems with it?
I’ve seen a couple of people have that message pop up, but I’ve never seen a specific cause or steps for reproducing it.
Yeah seems like it’s your anti virus. Turn off anti virus and see if it works. If it works then you’ll know that’s the issue. Then you can go into your anti-virus and allow the game or add the game to the exception list
Hey guys! thanks for the answers. I will try this out and let u know if it worked.
It might be useful for other people facing this issue and
- not having any activated antivirus
- having already deactivated the Tamper protection from Windows Defender
- having tested whatever had been proposed by anyone from MS
I’ve already solved this issue a few times, it seems that for every Windows Update, the procedure needs to be repeated…
My solution is:
a. remove (Win Key + “Remove programs” + search for …): Xbox and Gaming services
b. reboot
c. open Windows Store, install XBox
d. open XBox and be sure to not install Xbox Live whatever
e. from XBox launch AOE2DE (in my case, the first time it just closed AOE2DE, so I’ve tried once more, it installed an update and finally it opens).
I should note: I have Windows Defender completely deactivated, not only tamper protection. I have signed in/out from XBox, Store, whatever…
Hope it can be useful to anyone looking for a solution and not being succesful with the indications given so far. Also, I’d really appreciate if this kind of issues could be fixed by MS, one day.

I run into the problem this morning. I tried to follow your instructions but could not find a way to remove the XBox app, it simply did not appear in my app remove tool list.
Then I simply opened the Xbox app: an alert appeared, telling me that a recent OS update required to re-login in the Xbox app.
I logged in and run Aoe2 from the Xbox app and…it worked!
