Team games always match with higher rated opponent

no matter if i am 1200 or 1300 or 1400 or 1500 or 1600 elo i always get higher ranked opponent, usually 200 elo higher than me and premade, and my teammate always 200 elo lower. wtf is this matchmaking it is broken

I think i will never play a single team game anymore for the rest of my life

It certainly often feels unrewarding to play team games between the lame civ combos and mismatched teams. The only enjoyment I’ve had in team games is being in voice chat on discord with people whilst playing.

True. Not to mention the unbalance of civs in team games, that’s another topic. the opponent i get from ranked is also higher than me. Then what is the point of ranking system? If cannot find similar opponent just say no opponent, what is the point of matching with much higher rated opponent? To get games faster? Then just remove all ranking and let anyone match with anyone it is even faster.

My opponent should be either a bit higher or lower than me, but not like every single game being a bit higher. And some of them have 1600+ 1v1 rating but only 1400 team, it is smurf

Yeah sadly most team players realized lobby is far better to balance and get consistent games so ranked team is… well rough

The other thing happening is the 2k elo guys hit 7mins and get matched with whomever has a pulse. At 1400 elo you and the random 1200 elo guy might be the closest people in que based on rank.

Lobby games offer some fun. Survival has been fun lately. There are totally better and worse civs, but most civs are playable.

Lobby is a bigger joke. The result of game is not based on skill, it depends on which team has fewer absolute noobs (collect berries, farm age 1, no army, don’t understand unit counters, quit the moment he got attacked). It is all about your luck whether you can get the better team. Because for people who are unranked there is no way to accurately tell his level by the stars and bars (unranked rating).

That only describes like 10% of the lobbies, in fact like 40% lobbies are treaty, another 20% are skirmish vs AI, another 30% are super large map or high res noob boom settings or FFA, for the few lobbies that I can join would kick me for no reason. Then of course i have a rating of 14xx so more than half of the lobbies say “noob only” so i would get kicked if i join, as expected

Yea i know. It should not be like this. What is the point of letting 14xx to play vs 2k? Waste of time. If no opponent then just wait longer until there is one. Matching people with such huge disparity is pointless, just to quickly get people off the queue, the quality of game experience is same as not playing at all anyway. The average elo differences between two teams should be less than 200 no matter what. Because i am 1400 i can beat 1200 like 99 out of 100 games, but i lose to 1600s also 99 out of 100 games. Elo gap wider than that is meaningless

And sometimes in 1v1 that happens also. But way less frequent than team games. I 1400 elo and matched with mitoe, ezad, osteo, aileyugg and aizamk. Yea i tried, but the game is not even close. They are able to produce 2x the army than me. So what is the point of matching people with such wide elo gap just to end a queue? I would rather stay in queue

I am curious, in your perfect world, who would you match against my team of 1700-1800s (me), and my two friends (1100s, and 900-1000)?

If your elo is 1800 and 2x 1100 teammate then average for the team is 1300+ which is close to me. So if my team is 1300 1400 then it is playable. But not if average of opponent team is always 200 higher

He’s not saying lobby with randos. Lobby with people that know each other and they can split people to try to balance teams.

In house or a “xxxx elo+” lobby. Most people in this small community know eachother so assuming your elo isnt purely derived from laming people will gladly let you in. Team is almost treaty level of self supported community at this point thanks to all the bs (smurf boosting, lame builds, bad balance) teams have had causing high level team ranked to wither away.

I know that exists. But i m not a social person. To get into their community, i have to join the chat, play a lot with them, do voice chat often, then they are familiar with me. My first language is not english, and i cant predict when i can play. So it is hard to get into their community, or get myself known to them.

Most of aoe3 discords are bunch of long time friends very well known to each other, been playing together for years, so their circle is quite closed. They don’t really accept random players like me and treat me like friend you know

So i mostly play random team lobbies alone, or queue team ranked alone. Both are proved to be terrible.

it is well know the Elo is flaw in team games, it is a fundamental issue; it is only accurate if everyone teams are fixed ling enough like in professional sport tag ladder.

for aoe3 just relax your Elo s.d. a bit, like 200 is reasonable. i would say the 2nd and the 3rd is fine in aoe3 condition for you to have a chance.

I know the 2nd and 3rd are close enough on paper. But the thing is opponents are 1500+ or 1600+ in 1v1, and 1400-1500 in team. My teammate was 1100 in 1v1, and 1400 in team. I don’t know how it turns out to be like that, but he clearly performed like a 1100 elo and opponents performed like 1600 and was premade, so two guys 1500+ in 1v1, premade, only has 1400+ elo in team. Idk how they are like that, whether they intentionally dropped elo before, no idea.

Clearly 1v1 elo is more reflective of true skill but we are matched based on our team rating, which can be fake for a lot of players. I don’t know how the discrepancy is so large, don’t ask me. But at least for me trying my best my team elo would be around 100-150 higher than 1v1 I think that’s normal.

do they all have large enough game to settle their Elo, in 1v1 and team respectively?
because of how team Elo implementation in aoe3, a team have score up/down all together instead of calculating individually; and it doesn’t separate 2v2,3v3,4v4.

there are some smurf team but not that many as far as i know. i had post 1 group here can check my post history.

i would say premade team rank still doing what it supposed to do. may be Elo Alter should be implemented, like Trueskill2 from Microsoft, maybe.

I have been playing ranked team games solo Q for about a year now. It has been a mixed experience for me. Sometimes you play against premade teams, but that doesn’t mean automatically unbalanced games, for better or for worse. Sometimes it is just a little uneven, and if the match is ridiculously unbalanced (I always check elo’s at the beginning of the match) you can just resign and queue up again.

Also, when playing ranked team games, you have to be ready to carry your team, in case your mates are lower elo. That’s why picking the most versatile or powerful civ of the moment is best.

I managed to stay in 1900elo solo q with mexico, with a really powerful monocomp. I also managed to achieve 1800 abusing hakkas with the swedes.

There are a few players queuing solo Q ranked team games that orbit around the 2k elo: a germany player, making excellent use of uhlan raids; a dutch player defending masterfully with skirm and pike to develop economy before aging up; and an otto player making excellent use of poweful timings and mechanics.

I’m not going to say that it’s easy or without of a great deal of frustration, but it’s certainly not impossible to reach the gates of high elo playing team solo q.

Treaty lobbys stay open longer because they take longer to set up, you are seeing the same 5-10 lobbys for 20 minutes

Skirmish vs Ai is roughly as popular as team casual

Large maps, high res or FFA are least popular by far

But in general, i know what youre describing, since i had similar issues. The best solution is to host yourself and balance the teams. I dont mind noobs, as long as every team has the same amount/quality.
