Team games, dealing with annoying Mangudai

Current meta of 4v4 games for Mongols is to simply comb through the other teams base continually wiping out all the villagers from a safe distance. They are way too fast. Thinking knights would be a good option to catch them, it’s just a continual run while firing and you lose your units. They are like an annoying fly you’re trying to get out of a room, and it doesn’t add to the game. It just makes them incredibly annoying. There is a lack of skill to it, they simply just tell their ball of Mangudai to travel through a base several times, and you end up with kills without having to click anything. There is no point and click on specific attack target, they are always firing like a traveling turret. It’s ridiculous!

I’ve tried surrounding my farms with 4-6 towers as English, and several Castles. They don’t stay long enough in an area, and they continue sweep your base wiping everything in their path with little damage done to them. You cannot catch them with a group of knights, and if you do it takes awhile to where you’re losing too many units just with the annoying effort of continually chasing them. They are also way too cheap, and players just ball them and comb your base leaving a path of destruction.

I’m surprised there are no changes with this in the upcoming big update.

First combing pass of the Mangudai. They simply just rolled through my base and I had very little reaction time. Within seconds my units on wood were gone.

Oh look, they are fleeing and I can’t catch them, meanwhile I’m losing units just chasing them.

Yay, I’m losing my trade eco from a distance as the Mangudai can travel the length the entire map within less than a minute, and I have no time to react to it. By the time I get there, they will be gone in the fog of war.

I can’t even get close to these guys without losing my army. What’s the point of building defenses if they don’t even scratch the player? In this screenshot. Tons of arrows flying from towers and keeps but do minimal damage to the Mangudai. Merely a small scratch. Very unbalanced and annoying, it’s like you’re punished by doing the “right thing” and building defenses.

Yes. I hope their speed is slower and only faster if they use some kind of buff…

The natural counter vs mangudai are archers. Costless and more range. You need to scout the surrounding and be ready when they come. Also help create choke point with wood wall so you direct them where you have your defenses. It’s useless catch them with cav

Great answer thank you. The mangudai have been annoying me a lot until I knew that. When you not have walls early in the game you could also place some archers at every location your villagers are gathering resources. Only archers should follow them.

I ever place two castles near my farming villagers. This way I can protect my economy from mangudai/knights, and if they get closer they die.

As main abbasid, I just build camel archers, they are stronger and faster than the mangudai, and they got owned very hard.

I find this to be “the book answer”, but I’ve found that archers are a terrible counter with the Mangudai attacking. The Mangudai do the damage and once you start your counter the Mangudai they set off running again to another area to attack that’s unguarded. GUARD ALL THE AREAS! This just continues over and over again to where your attention is no longer focused on the rest of game, it’s just dealing with this group of Mangudai.

Another thing I find that should be eliminated is Mangudai acting like a moving turret that’s always firing. Shift + click “move to” (not attack area) several passes through all bases from one end of the map to the next and you’re bound to start cleaning up villagers without clicking any targets.

They should remove the auto-firing on villagers and traders in my opinion. The player never said to attack area, or unit, why are we giving this OP mechanic to them? It’s ruining the game. All the opponent needs to do is click two points to follow and the Mangudai with kill everything in it’s path. The same applies to your eco trade route. Once they know this, the opponent sets two points of your trade route. They don’t have to click or focus on anything else and the Mangudai kills all your traders just by setting 2 points to follow. Way too OP.

Creating choke points and scouting sounds good and all, but in a team game where you’re dealing with 3 other opponents it’s not feasible. You’re simply saying control the map and all areas, which is impossible in a team game. It’s way too huge of a map. By the time it takes to travel to counter something that “may or may not happen” it’s already gone in the fog of war.

Not in my experience. They’ve moved through my base killing all my villagers. This was with several keeps and towers firing on the group. With the Khan buff, these petty arrows barely scratch them. And these are garrisoned towers and keeps.

Huge maps in team games have an entirely different gameplay than smaller maps on 1on1’s. People literally do not use/make armys until 15 minutes and i seriously dont get the point. Why not just decrease map size, cheezy strats will be gone as early pressure will become effective and people who focus on the late game can still host/join “no attack until xx” games. If you for example focused on building a huge mangudai army on 1on1s you would be dead very soon. Its just a niche unit there its too expensive and very very micro intensive due to the low hp and range. In my opinion they should even be made stronger as they are barely used now. At the same time reduce map sizes for team games. This game will always have balance issues with those huge maps.

Build Outpost and reduce the size of 3v3/4v4 maps in quick play.

Mangudais are trash units mate,
and they take time to get massed and are very easy to counter.

I guess it is casuals dilemma 11

you don’t know what you’re talking about. Move along.

If you watch pro players, they will never make Mangudai as they are trash units.
Too expensive and can be countered easily.

What can you do to counter Mangudai? Simple wooden wall problem solved, archers - problem solved, horsemen, problem solved. outposts keep etc. they all counter mangudai.

Mangudai is the weakest unique unit in AOE4 as it is too expensive and does little.

It is you who do not know how to play this game in high level, so as a casual you will struggle when you see mangudais as you don’t read the in game stats and don’t watch streams etc.

You can simply build wood wall around your base even in open map. And it doesn’t cost so much in wood.
One of the skills is to have vision of the surroundings and know how to quickly save citizens in towers or city centers. Even for me at the beginning of my experience months ago I thought that mangudai were op, but then I realized that they are easy to counter and cost so much for what they can give. They only work if you’re undefended and looking elsewhere.
Trade routes are another question, but in my experience are easy raidable with every units, not only with mangudai

We are talking about team games.
Not 1v1 with “pro players”.

yes, in team games, NOB or mangos massacre mangudai like paper too
They are just running papers
