Technical question about ranged units

Does anyone know if it is technically possible to have ranged units fire while moving in this game? I know that no unit currently does this and there may have been limitations when the game first came out but are there such limitations today? We have seen so many new mechanics added to the game, charge mechanics, cavalry units resurrecting after their horses die, units changing attack modes depending on the target they attack, units bleeding over time and many other mechanics… but we have never had a ranged unit that can attack while moving and I am wondering if this is an engine limitation or just a design choice. I feel that now that we may finally be getting melee pathing to a point where melee units can effectively close distance to ranged units and surround them it may be cool to have some units that can attack while moving. Or even doing something like making Parthian Tactics actually behave more like the real life Parthian Tactics and allow Cav Archers to shoot while moving.

Pretty sure these were possible in the original game also.As per the shoot while moving I have no idea if that is possibly or not.

AoE 4 Mangudai can shoot while moving, would be cool to have it for a UU in AoE 2 as well.
But I’m likewise not sure whether it’s possible or not.

Having 0 attack delay is close but as units have no inertia…

Aura which damages enemy units would be a better idea,how to make a projectile go hit an enemy is a different issue.If enemy unit is inside the arura the closest enemy unit should get the damage and a secondary animation should trigger which shows a bow being shot triggering might work.if there are multiple enemies within similar range the tile they are in should have some priority.

Ah I want less of these aura mechanisms to be honest. Feels too much like a fantasy game and less like Age of Empires.

Im also not a fan of it but thats the closest thing we have ingame right now to do something like attack while moving.

@thieftdp8498 have you tried experimenting on attack while moving with the current things?

less time atm but yea still testing several new features.

theres another way found for attack while moving but its also kinda borked just like the previous one with onager.

but I think biggest issue with attack while moving not going to work properly with this game is due to it’s old engine on rendered graphics. for example attack/walking angle facing, so if we wanted real parthian tactic to work, horse would have to be able to run sideways/backwards facing while the attacking unit facing the enemy direction.

im sure this can probably be added as a game feature but would break a lot of stuff while doing it, and prob just not worth it.

Interesting. What if it was shooting in the same direction the unit was moving? Would that make it more “doable”? Although admittedly that’s not as useful as being able to run away and shoot backwards.

the new “borked” one tested is kinda just what u described. it is using attack animation as expected, because its attacking but moving so it looks hella weird. the unit is moving, but graphic wise, horse legs aren’t moving just the rider attacking while entire unit moving back, kinda like that 11

though there maybe work around for it, its a lot of work and not even sure if it’ll end well (visual wise)

Hmmmm ok so it seems its technically possible but its a matter of animating the units properly. But yes I can see that it seems extremely cumbersome and would require a lot of additional animation frames.

there are also some hard limit, say if enemy is within range and you want to run around it have it auto attack, it won’t work with current method at least not ones ive found.

so currently its only really just 1 direction, it attack enemy and enemy unit closing in, it’ll fall back automatically and thats it. in that sense it is automatically moving back but any other direction it won’t auto attack. basically non functioning 11

Yea right… interesting… so not even attack move works? I was imagining something akin to attack move so that you click an area and the unit starts to move in that direction but instead of the current mechanism where it stops to shoot, it just continues moving while shooting.

The other thing I was imagining was if there was like a secondary attack mode you could switch on the unit (like the Ratha weapon swap button) so that you “turn on” the ability to run and attack at the same time. Admittedly that’s a little clunkier though.

If you use a unit like the hussite wagon the visual issue is sorted,it can even use the same move graphics and projectiles will shoot from all sides.

That’s a good point. But that’s even a worse representation of what a Hussite Wagon actually was which was basically a stationary makeshift fortification rather than a fast moving siege unit.

I do remember reading about the hussites breaking out from an enemy army by mounting the smaller canons and firing while moving out.

Anyways my suggestion was how to mitigate the visual awkwardness of moving while firing.

This might be less broken than an actual unit being able to fire while moving.
