TG ELO unfair and matchmaking unoptimized

TG Elo calculation is unfair

Currently, the way TG elo is calculated is by comparing your elo to the average elo of players in the game (I am pretty sure it is more complicated than this).

Example 1 Theoretical -
Situation 1: Everyone in a TG is 1500, and you lose.
Situation 2: Everyone in a TG is 1500, and you have a 1000-rated player on your team, and you lose.

In situation 2, you lose more elo than in situation 1 because you lost, and the average elo of players in the game was lower. Your chances of losing are also greater because the Elo difference between the teams isn’t in your favour.

Example 2 Practical from AOMstats -

Image1: I play a balanced game where the elo of the lobby is 1599 (I am 1626), and I lose 18 elo. The elo difference of teams was 84 in favour of our team.

Image2: I play an imbalanced game where the elo of the lobby is 1400 (I am 1538), and I lose 18 elo. The elo difference of teams was 572 in favour of their team. I lost the same amount of elo in both games, despite one being slightly favoured to my team and the other being practically unwinnable.

TG matchmaking
TG matchmaking is currently not optimised to create games where the TG elo difference between each team is minimised.

Image3 included. The likelihood that Anatolia_dodger and I were the only ones pre-made is 99% according to my investigation. Squirrel (Susano) and Mikhael (Poseidon) should have swapped positions in the teams to make the game more balanced.

Suggestion:
Everyone in the team should gain/lose the same amount of elo based on the elo difference between teams, and matchmaking should be optimised to minimise the elo difference between teams.

Completely agree. Right now queueing up with random teams in TG is a joke. Current system only works if everyone’s more or less equal, but with the low playerbase you simply can’t reliably get equal matchups. Why should a higher ELO player be penalized for getting matched with someone lower?

They are premade teams. I’ve seen them play; everyone in that clans does the exact same thing, as if they were clones or a ‘copy paste’ of each other. These premades only play like c0wards, attacking 3 vs 1 to kick you out of the match quickly and steal your elo points easily. They don’t even care about actually playing; they are like leeches waiting for you to let your guard down so they can suc.k your blood. Just look at the match time, it’s way too short, which proves exactly what I’m saying.

It’s a complete disgrace and a disappointment that premade teams are allowed in ranked matches. They ruin every game and create a massive imbalance. If premades didn’t exist in ranked, the game would have more players, and there wouldn’t be so many bans or player harassment.

While premade teams exist, every match will be unfair, unbalanced, and toxic, and the game will keep losing players.

This was a long problem in AOE2 and led to Elo inflation. That’s why everyone get a different amount of points.

This whole post is just you discovering how ranked team games actually work and then getting mad about it.

Premade teams aren’t some shady exploit or cheat. It’s literally people playing together in a competitive mode. Coordination, similar builds, focus fire, and consistent decisions are not “clone behavior”, that’s just what decent players look like. Calling it copy paste just shows you don’t understand how meta and efficiency works.

And the whole 3 vs 1 complaint is honestly ridiculous. What do you even expect in a team game, three polite 1v1s happening at the same time? That’s not how any competent team plays, premade or not. And if you’re the one getting 3v1’d, then maybe do the obvious thing and coordinate with your own team first. Pick a target, group up, and be the ones doing the 3 vs 1 instead. If you’re not willing to do that, then don’t play a team-based ranked mode, or go make your own team. Team games reward teamwork, not solo hero fantasies.

You also act like premades win because they have some insanely complex masterplan that solo players could never pull off. That’s pure fantasy. Team strategy doesn’t require a 2 hour meeting, daily practice, or a secret discord ritual. Even with randoms, all it takes is someone saying “focus this guy”, “meet here”, or “I’ll build X, you do Y”. Any half decent player can coordinate something like that in the first two minutes of a match.

And here’s the important part you keep ignoring: even if premades were completely removed, 3v1s would still happen. Focus fire would still happen. Grouping up would still happen. People would still mark a spot on the map, move together, and kill isolated players. That’s not a premade-exclusive mechanic, that’s just basic human teamwork.

The “they only want to steal elo” argument is also nonsense. Ranked exists to win and gain rating. Ending matches fast, snowballing advantages, and punishing mistakes is literally the objective. Short match times don’t prove abuse, they prove a skill gap.

Blaming premades for toxicity, bans, or the game losing players is just coping. Removing premades wouldn’t suddenly make the game fair for you. You’d just lose to better solo players instead and find something else to blame.

This isn’t feedback, it’s a ragepost. You’re not losing because others are masterminds running complex strategies. You’re losing because even simple, obvious team play is enough to break your game, and instead of adapting, you want the system changed to carry you.

Honestly, this entire rant makes no sense. You queue for a ranked team mode, lose to teamwork, and then act surprised that teamwork exists. If you don’t want people grouping up on you, play 1v1. If you don’t want to coordinate, don’t play team games. And if you don’t want premades, make your own team. None of this is a balance issue, it’s just you playing the wrong mode and blaming everyone else for it.

I know this post concerns the elo gain/loss calculation, but I want to voice my opinion that the single most important change is to make it so that resetting the queue before 4 minutes guarantees that it won’t be one of those unwinnable/unlosable matchups.
