The Alt+F4 Multiplayer Problem

Well you make some good points.

I like the suggestion someone made where each type of map has a hidden or different ELO for the player, and then the player has an average ELO for all the maps

I find it amazing that this topic is from August/20. It will be one year old in 50 days.

It seems like ranked lobbies will be a thing, starting with DM. If it eventually get to RM, players may move to Lobbies and the matchmaking system either becomes obsolete or they dont and it remain as is. Considering the speed that these things are decided, it should be another 6 months until RM Lobbies are a thing though.

Until then, I suppose we continue to deal with this situation where:
a) Players are unhappy with the map pool system and fight it with altf4’s;
b) Players are unhappy with the altf4ers;
c) Long queues and frustration for both.

I am not particularly happy with ranked lobbies becoming a thing. IMO it will either:

i) destroy matchmaking: players that use it are few and games are imbalanced and queue is long. Due to players focusing only on a small selection of maps, Elo bubbles become a thing.
ii) flop and things remain as is.

I prefer to have matchmaking with unlimited bans (or equivalent mechanism to deal with current player frustration), at least there will always be some level of overlap between players and Elo will remain somewhat balanced across maps, as well as reduced queue times.

I welcome the inclusion of RM lobbies, though I do think that if they become a thing a lot of players are going to use them for a week or two and then remember just how annoying/difficult it was to find proper/balanced games compared to automatic matchmaking and promptly go back to using the queue. Maybe the diehard Arena/BF crowd sticks to them and that’s ok.

F U C K. T H I S. S H I T. I’M OUT.

UNPLAYABLE SH I: 4 min in the queue. some sh it will ALT+F4 +4 min in the queue
15 min in the game and it out of sync.

12 minute to find game=\

Dota even better =\

i think this should be a proof for @anon45959656 and everyone else that the problem can be alt f4 and we should ignore it and look for a solution for it

What do you think about hidden ELO for each type of map, then average ELO displayed?

If there is a change with RM MM with just arabia variations, and BF restricted to lobbies with MMR, then I hope the punishment/ban to dodgers comes with all the effort.

somehing small like a 15 minutes ban non -scaled for dodgers would be enough deterrance for this behaviour.

well the only thing that should be changed is variation on maps like one arabia map one close map one open map one water map one hybrid map and like nomad and or megarandom

It would be a really bad change to have only Arabia and Arabia clones in MM. I really hope the devs wont go that way. This game isnt Arabia only. Luckily it isnt Arabia only.

But, based on the following post, you only lost 2 minutes. Dont make things worse :clown_face:
You clearly show @anon45959656 is false with this statement.

too bad microsoft didn’t hired some blizzard vet cappable of coding a matchmaking with good amount of bans.

All of them are now in Frostgiant, tencent and dreamhaven.

still strange how advanced are the programers of other games like CSGO (infinite bans) or SC2 (3 bans even when soloing team-games) compared with the AoE2 programers who can’t code it.

i cant remeber where but i suggested that there should be 1 of each in the map pool so one open one close one water map and maybe landnomad or regular nomad and or megarandom

It has nothing to do with “advanced programming” and everything to do with the size of the matchmaking pool.

nah, the size of the MM pool was big when the pandemic kicked. And the infinite bans are optional. when playing CSGO in office the time in queue es too long. the solution is always to put 3 or 4 maps to get the game quick.

AoE2 can’t code a decent matchmaking because they don’t know how, or because they don’t want to. It can be the former because the team is mostly formed by modders.

CSGO has an average concurrent player count of ~600,000.

At the height of the pandemic, DE’s average concurrent player count peaked at ~20,000. Today that number is closer to 14k.
CSGO
AoE2: DE

This isn’t a solution because chances are you won’t be playing on Office if you do this. The same applies to AoE2, your options are now to play on the same map everyone else is playing, or wait far too long for a game on an unpopular map, in which the match will likely be unbalanced due to the small number of players queueing for it.

FWIW I wouldn’t have an issue playing in this system because I don’t mind playing nothing but Arabia, but calling it a perfect solution is far from correct.

I 100% guarantee you that it’s the latter, the devs may change their mind in the future, but their current decisions make a lot of sense given the size of the playerbase and the ultimate goal of generating balanced matches.

numbers in teamgames are going down because this alt-f4 issue.

if the number of players was really the reason to not bring a better MM, then the devs could have said it. But they are still silent.

when there is a silence this long is because the negligency can only come from an embarrasing reason.

well you can think what you want but there are 3 core problems and if we adress them then maybe all this madness will stop

  1. fixing the elo inflation and resetting the elo or whatever else it takes so people play on their appropriate level of elo

  2. Skimming (kinda) the map rotation so its 1 map of eatch represented like 1 open map like area one close map like black forest or amazoness tunnel one Hybrid map like baltic on watermap likes Island or Team Island or Teammatch and one Map like Land Nomad/ Nomad and or Megarandom

  3. punish current people who alt f4 as they grief the game and set a upscaling time out for them like 10m/30m/1m/temporary discalification from the ranked queue (and yes in that order)

“This is an issue we’ll be monitoring and managing on an ongoing basis once the solution is Live, to ensure that players who are using this tact to dodge queues aren’t finding new ways to abuse the system.”

So according to this the devs seems to be going for a punitive system, i hope not otherwise the next rants will be: too long queues and too unfair match making encounters, players resigning/dropping starting the game.

Its complicated. Take TGs as an example. If you had a hidden Elo for each map, maps rotating every 21 days
 How does that work? Elo for each new map starts from 1000? Or it starts from your average? I find it will be bad both ways.
a) If you start from 1000, you may take 50-80 games to get it to a competitive level;
b) If it starts from your average means it has the same weight as any other map, so there is no incentive to try the new map out, because it will in fact reduce your Elo (for players that think that Elo is the reward, not the tool).
Then map is out for 6 months
 When it comes back, do you start from scratch? Does it update to match your current average Elo?

I personally prefer to keep things simple.

The fact that this post has gone on live for almost over a year with thousands of replies
shows how serious a problem the Alt-F4 situation is.

I just hope that the devs come up with SOME solution. It don’t have to even be a perfect one, just a solution, and then adjust/adapt from there based on the community feedback and the devs observing the results and experiencing the solution-making process.
