I really cant see any huge problem here. lets wait and see what the Beta play gives. Personally I think that house walling destroys the game a lot. Besides being higly unrealistic and uggly it only contributes to delay and destroy gameplay. If you want to turtle build walls. Historicly it was very common to build 2 or even 3-4 layers of walls in a Village- Town - City- Stronghold and Castle.
I agree but you can’t moderate what others do when they play a map without you. And you are right, we derailed this thread
In an english campaign trailer we saw the city of York. I would love to “visit” the city in AOE4, but with so much empty space between houses its impossible. The buildings are smaller than in real life compared to people. If they would allow to build houses really tight at least in the campaign, they could build the city with the same compromise as building ratio. I mean it like they could build York with 50 houses instead of 5000 idk. The main street could be 8 house long instead of 80, you get the idea. Like a small model city with the iconic buildings, bridges, temples, market, dock, etc. I would like to see the cities built in the campaign. I like that we have to build walls, not just houses in pvp, but even there we should see some nice cities. (In pvp idk what would be the solution, but in the missions they should be more free to make it look nice.)
Making units able to move through the houses using doors would be somewhat a solution. But horses, elephants and siege wouldnt fit. But those tear down houses easy anyway. Then we could build houses close to each other and it would be realistic, because infantry can raid quickly through houses, but horses need to run around. And players should wall not just house wall because the enemy will have some infantry most of the times. Maybe units should be a little bit slowed down by houses but thats it.
I know what you mean. We have these cities in AoEO. They are fun little versions.
I love the home islands in AoEO! And the cities look gorgeous on them.
Please look at how many of the people discussing have beta tags. Which makes the posts relevant.
If this was pure speculation, then yes the thread would be irrelevant. But the reason why beta players can talk about this is because the Devs literally mentioned publicly that many players complained about zoom level. However they (I don’t know if it was jokingly) said “that’s not how you play a RTS game!”
And people can talk about graphics coz it’s in the trailers lol
- Buildings have to became smaller in width so that they do not take all the screen
- Units have to become a little bigger so that
- Camera move to zoom out more, way more.
Yes, some are saying that the buildings height is small. This will not change. The point is what we prefer. More zoom or every building to be higher than every unit. (practically only barracks have in mind with this ‘problem’.
So should we resign ourselves to the current scale? I would say that you have to keep insisting.
I would like to play the game in this zoom!
I certainly do not recall seeing any dev recently recognize this as the ongoing, significant issue that it is. Hopefully they fix this soon, but we do not know. I know the devs have repeatedly said they intend to continue to support and develop AoE4 until it’s in far superior shape that fully addresses any number of ongoing concerns. I’ve chosen to take them up on that and hold off on playing the game until then.I’m not sure how else to remain politely insistent. Needless to say, I can’t wait to play the game.
The buildings being spaced is intentional to do away with the walling with buildings that occurred in other games. It was done on purpose as a balance/gameplay decision. Same thing with unit size so hitboxes and ease of clicking on things takes priority over artistic feel.
I understand that. It causes all sorts of harm.
Allowing buildings to touch would cause harm to gameplay which is more important than harm to how something looks. No need to make mangonels and ranged units and fire lancers stronger than they already are.
U wot?..Units (and basically anything with a hitbox) are harder to click on than in any previous AGE game. And when did you ever miss a building you wanted to click on in any of those games?
The field of view issues OP shows here are just fact: You see less of the game world. It’s not an “artistic feel”. It’s an easy to spot fact.
Really? It didn’t cause any harm in the previous games.
You take bad design decisions that most certainly came to life later in the development process (broken fire lancer and siege stats) to validate not being able to wall with buildings (a core design decision for base building).
Why even bother to necro OP’s thread with this bs?
Im not the one that necrod the thread, OP came in and complained they still haven’t changed “the ongoing significant issue that it is”
My point with the hitboxes was the complaint that units are too big. I would rather not make hitbox issues worse than they already are, some of them are already annoying to deal with.
just wondering, does anyone know if it will be possible to have a “small trees” mod like people did with AOE2DE
I know that was one of the most common mods, especially for competitive play. I wonder if a similar thing would be possible in aoe4? or we dont know yet…
I do not recall seeing any details that would answer that question.
We get mod tools in the spring update but information about what we will get and what will be usable in online is sparse atm.
It’s better than people/building scale in AOE1.
