The curious case of AoE 4 graphics (lots of screenshots)

If voices about Relic Is not working on AOE4 as before are true, It Will be a big problem and maybe AOE4 would be in its final state of Life with only few updates along the way.

So, After RELIC’s layoffs and its actually indipendence without a Publisher i don’t see a good future for AOE4.

It could be a problem also for the future of the whole Franchise because World’s Edge is a small team.

Now, assuming these rumors as true, the right decision could be the acquisition of Relic Entertainment by XBOX making them the main AOE developers.

And yes, in this case, we’ll not see graphic improvents of course. They are expensive and requesting different people to work on them and only Relic Is able to work with their Engine.

Relic dropping IV is bad for everyone. Ugh.

Yeah something tells me comments like this are the reason why they haven’t went public with this.

Maybe they’re licensing Essence to Forgotten Empires now, and offering consulting work. We don’t know the details.

Some people are happy about it. We’ll see. Though I’m not sure if Relic dropped IV, or Microsoft dropped Relic. I don’t see why their new owner would say no if offered to extend the contract. It’s guaranteed money.

People like me are who made AOE one of the biggest franchise in the world (we are the first AOE fans).
i bought all games and Expansions every time. I’m member of this community since 2017, there will be a reasons After all.

Ok, maybe not people like you, but comments like that, aka doom posting.

Forgotten previously already hired people specifically for AoE 4 in various roles:

Yeah. It kinda makes sense for them to have some people working only on AoE4, given it’s a different engine, and maybe share some people between the different games.

I’m just worried about the quality of the next civs. The new units they added recently, the Khan Hunters and the Malian units, look very similar to already existing units. Some of them to the point of only having a different color on their armor. This is not a good sign in retrospect, now that we know they’re not designed by Relic.

I don’t know what they’re dreaming it’s gonna happen with AoM, but I really hope the next AoE4 DLC will be on par with the previous one, if they care at all about the future of this franchise.

This. And It could explain why they are taking all of this time to reveal It.

We Simply know that “more exicting new Will come during 2025” but we are not sure about a new DLC. We are suggesting It.

“We’re also turning our attention to what’s next as we plan for our Season Nine release later this year, and even more exciting offerings in Spring 2025.”

It’s very vague, but they did say offerings, not news, so for their sake I hope it’s more than a release date.

Well they confirmed now that it is DLC. So I really don’t think there’s anything to worry about, regardless of which teams are working on the game to what extent.

New biomes look great. They are varied, they feel different and are a little more than just a grassy plain. I have some complaints which I will get to, but first, I’d like to applaud the developer with the constraint in their soul to utilize a singular tree species for the Alpine biome. Look how good that is!

This looks infinitely more like a forest than the unhinged usage of 50 different tree species in one biome of all colours and shapes just to pad for space. The two new jungle/swamp/mangrove biomes are also showing a much more nuanced usage of trees species that add to the feel rather than detract from it.

There are a few issues however. The Greek Island maps features Prickly Pear bushes. Mind you, I want new skins for bushes and assets and I want to praise this otherwise, but Prickly Pears in Greece? Cacti are exclusive to the new world. So it sounds like this biome was originally meant to be somewhere in the new world, and was then renamed, opting to match Macedonians for the DLC after whatever changes happened to the DLC. I don’t want to concede to the possibility that an environmental dev genuinely thought, “Hey, Greece is deserty, let’s add Cacti”. That is of course, unless the developers just saw pictures of Greece or went there once and saw them. Like tomatoes, they do grow in Greece… TODAY. But, even if we extend AoE4’s timeperiod to post-discovery era, they were not wildly growing in Greece for centuries to come.

Again. I do want unique bushes. In fact, I want more unique bushes so we can also retrofit them into the older biomes where they belong. These are very cheap assets that add so much. Just make sure they actually belong.

As far as complaints go, I’d like them to adjust the textures that are placed down alongside with buildings. Buildings come with prepackaged assets like pots, bushes, fences and also texture decals on the floor like flagstones or tracks. This is great and its the type of smart environmental design that makes AoE4 stand out. However, the dirt textures seem to be pre-baked as opposed to utilizing existing ground texture from the biome it is placed upon. The result is jarring, as civilizations feature different types of textures beneath their buildings. Malians, Abbasid are jarring in snow biomes for instance, and here is an example of Tughlaq’s buildings heavily contrasting with the black sand in one of the new biomes. This should be addressed because it heavily muddles the aesthetic of this game. I’ve also noticed that chopped trees also leave a ground texture which does not utilize the existing ground texture, so in this same black-sand biome, forests will look weird when chopped down. The same goes for Siege units that will unpack, drop a bunch of miscoloured sand, then pack up along with the sand like ???

I have enjoyed the new unique weapon additions to many civilizations, and the attempt to address the metallic shine, but there are still plenty of weapons that look plastic white (like western Guisarme from English, HRE Spearmen) that need to be changed. I have also noticed a problem with the new weapon additions.

Delhi, Abbasid and Tughlaq now use a new spear model for their spearmen, but the Imperial and Castle age models are swapped.

I’m still hoping we get new rivers to match the new water we got, unique animals/bushes in different biomes, a better Anti-aliasing solution for the foliage, cleaned up older biomes (like Gobi desert ground texture) and revisit the tree assets used in older biomes to make them more specific to said biome rather than a mishmash of whatever.

Happy to see more steps address the visual fidelity of AoE4 but I strongly urge more aggressive additions. We can afford animal models, seriously talk to your managers or whatever, it’s been 4 years since launch without taking into consideration the development time itself.

Yes, things have improved quite a bit, let’s see when they add something from America…

Please Relic Entertainment could you update AoE IV with recent engine changes?
Spectacle, Fog, Fire, and Metal are looking pretty nice on CoH 3

They will did not. Essence Engine used for CoH3 is a Better version in comparison to AOE4 and Essence Engine has been developed for RTS with a small scale. Latest COH3’s DLCs are ok and Essence is very good now. Effects are Amazing and also textures are great. This is what i was imaging for AOE4 when It has been announced 8 years ago.

Look forward and Hope to see Unreal Engine 5 make a Better work for the future of AOE.

On one of the new wintery biomes, the tree that covers the map features a branch that has a broken white texture which can be seen from the main angle in which the game is played from.

It is easy to miss because you could mistake it for snow due to the snowy biome, but it is in fact a broken piece of texture.

Oh and, the fabric covering Raider Elephants are one sided polygons. They’re lacking texture underneath.

And I don’t know if this is a bug, it seems more like an artifact of production, but Tughlaq’s MAA feature silvery shields (Delhi has golden ones). Whether this was intended to help further distinguish Castle from Imperial Age, or to help make Delhi/Tughlaq stand out from Abbasid (who already have golden shields) or if Tughlaq’s MAA was suppoused to have a shield technology, or simply that their MAA was unique, I have no idea, but it is inconsistent for a few reasons. For one, this shield is silver both in Castle and Imperial, and only Tughlaq has it (not Delhi). They also have no special bonuses besides the technology in House of Wisdom which alters their sword. So, whatever this is, I don’t know. I personally like them having silvery shields, but I would want both Delhi and Tughlaq to have the same kind for consistency reasons. Perhaps this has a historical basis, I don’t know.

Yes, since it’s the same engine, it’s strange that they haven’t updated AoE 4 to those graphics…

Yeah, it doesn’t look bad either, they look like snow-covered pine trees and from a distance it’s not so noticeable… I’d add some deer grazing here and there and a few berries and it would look good…

AoE IV and CoH 3 will have forked years ago at this point. It’d be like asking Relic to backport CoH 2 graphics into vCoH (or CoH 3 into CoH 2, or DoW II into vDoW, etc).

It’d be better to play to what AoE IV has right now. An simple suggestion is always “animate the animals in buildings”. Or “add more / better siege death animations”. If there is resource free, and it doesn’t impact critical minspec figures, those two would be top of my personal list.

Gaia variants would also be nice. I’m hoping the sheep changes are them dipping their feet into that.

Yes, I’ve gotten used to the graphics since 2021. Now I prefer they release new civilizations and then update the graphics with each season, like they did in Season 6…

Yeah I see since they are using the same engine the updates not to be that demanding

I wonder why they did not do this in the first place

The min specs for AoE IV are very low (much lower than in CoH 3). Adding things that can’t be turned off in the game settings would cause the game to become unplayable, which would be a breach of (consumer) contract. These things are not taken lightly.

Assuming that isn’t the reason, then it’s always time / cost / resource. Which is why I hope they’ll get to it at some point (they fixed the Floating Gate water!).
