I find this reasoning really funny. We already have something in the game that nobody wanted or asked for, therefore we should add other things that nobody wants or asked for!
I teach maths – maybe I should apply this reasoning to marking exams. Once a student makes an error, any subsequent error is actually correct. It would certainly lead to better grades!
Math is just art, but not fun and a hundred times more confusing. So, really not like art at all. Both are based on objective principles though – good art can be quantifiably measured.
Maths is about making analogies between similar arguments in different contexts, and that’s what I was doing. (Although I was mostly just being facetious.) This forum probably isn’t the place for a discussion about what maths is, what art is, or the relationship between the two, so I’ll restrain myself from going into any more detail.
It can be objectively evaluated against subjective criteria – but then, so can anything.
Auras don’t fit the game mechanically (at least the game as it used to be a decade ago) but they are a believable approximation of a commander boosting the soldiers’ morale.
Vampires would not fit the game thematically. The only magic in the game is monks healing units from distance, which is funny but has been an element of the game since its release. Adding fantasy creatures outside the scenario editor would blur the line between AoE and AoM.
At most, I could imagine them as Scenario Editor and cheat units (that don’t appear in the official campaigns). People believed in their existence in medieval Europe, so they could be useful if someone made a custom scenario set in medieval Europe involving supernatural elements (if the unit was primarily based on medieval folklore rather than modern pop culture).
Why? The reason AOE-4 was made the way it is was to attract AOE-2 players, and it didn’t work. I don’t see any reason to repeat the formula if they’re going to keep playing Age of Empires 2 for the rest of their lives anyway.
The only advantages of AOE-4 over AOE-3 are the limited field of view imposed by the environment and the ability to place units on top of walls. Generally, AOE-3 is superior in mechanics and art.
A lot of the aura and healing effects are corny and out of place. Variety is good for the game so units like the Fire lancer and Champi are welcomed additions. I think just limiting the craziness of some of the buffs and abilities would go a long way. Also, could we move 3K to Chronicles? Would reduce the size of the civ pop. Not sure what other civs they could add at this point. People have been clamoring for African civs but that’s all I feel could be added effectively?
The original version of this game and HD weren’t already more easily obtainable. Especially HD which can still be found on steam.
And if you’re gonna complain about the lack of QoL improvements in those versions then you people never cared about the soul of this game in the first place.
