The Devs agree to add an Indian civ to address the Community's concerns

I got to admit, some of us would be really happy to hear some unit say “erectus” again

If I remember well Kingdom of León split into Portugal and Castille by succesions. They could add this kingdom, at the end becoming Portugal or Castille (Spain) with different units, bonus or techs like China does but more game changing.

I like this idea. Portugal wasn’t an independent kingdom until 1139. The game seems to be focusing on 1000-1500 AD (from the overlap in the civ descriptions). So it would be a little late in the time period. But its golden age was ~1415-1578, so it would nice to have it included.

I would caution having ‘Spain’ in the game, and would rather see it still be Leon/Castile on the other half of the split. Spain’s golden age wasn’t until ~1492-1659 so a little outside the scope of the game. The China page lists 1644 as it’s end date, but I would caution against constantly pushing against the end date. Having tercios (first mentioned in 1534) is probably also probably going too far.

Overall though, I like your idea

Isn’t it interesting how such a small geographic area (Europe) was powerful enough to conquer all these bigger places

lol conquest has nothing to do with this.
What they are illustrating is that those geographical areas are big and diverse.
There are all kinds of peoples living there. So they think it would be interesting to explore that.

Diversity is not what matters in a history game about achievements, conquests and culture. If you have no records or archeological evidences
Tough.

except they literally do.

Except every one of those cultures they’ve listed have their own achievements, conquests, and culture.

I don’t understand why Chinese are in age games when they never went out of the big wall… While Indias have more history and fights

I saw an interview with Sandy Peterson in which he explained the Asian civs were added to AoE1 on account of attempting to market to Asian countries such as China and Japan and Korea.

Well yes but most of the colonialism took off after the AoE4 timeline . Your argument only works for AoE3 .

Chinese Empires were the most powerful and wealthiest ones for most of History . Not including them would be weird .
I think , it’s more likely that they are campaign fodder for the Mongols

You should read more books on history.

we have 3 western European civs. I think it would of made as much sense to have an Indian civ or a south east asian civ instead of one of the west European civs.

The Byzantines deserve to be there. So do the Franks and Germans. The mistakes were including the English, whose empire in the Middle Ages was backwater French stomping grounds and the Rus, who just were not that mighty in the Middle Ages compared to so, so many civs from across the planet who have been excluded.

To the Devs’ credit, the four new civs are each great choices. The release civs were a mixed bag though.

I think the inclusion of the English was a political move. They really didn’t become influential on the world stage until after the timeframe of the game.

Seeing as they are the most played civilization, I would wager it is more along the lines of familiarity of AoE2 as well as the language and civilization. This was made by a canadian company, for largely an english speaking audience, so it isn’t much of a surprise if you ask me.

To say it was political would suggest this game holds much if any significance at all outside of gaming. Well, to some degree, perhaps the over representation of anglo media is a real thing, but it is simply all too easy for that kind of media and culture to become mainstream considering the widespread usage of the language following the events of the 20th century.

I think that’s a certainty. We are speaking to each other in English, after all. (Even though the reasons for this did not happen until after the Middle Ages and after 1492.)

The English being one of the Top 8 launch civs is just really, really bad history. Rus, too.

Europe is over represented. But the Byzantines are at least a legit choice.

It was upsetting to see the English and Rus on release with no Byzantines. The longest lasting European empire should have been one of the first European civs to include.

This franchise has an extremely long history of excluding many sides of the globe at release and relegating them to dlc afterthoughts. Back in 2012, I thought we were past this. Sadly we apparently aren’t yet.

Hopefully they don’t repeat tying the Spanish in with the American civs again. (If we ask AoE2, the only role the Maya, Aztecs, and Inca play in world history is to show up to be conquered by the white guys.) Honestly I hope Europe is put on ice for a long while.
