“The 5 new civs aren’t a Chinese split” explicitly stated by the lead dev. Then they literally added 3 Kingdoms, that are inherently Chinese and aren’t even Medieval.
There is one thing that bothers me even more: Khitans have the Tangut Castle as well as the Tangut Unique Unit! What a joke! They’re disrespecting East Asian history and us!
Cant say Im shocked. This game lost its way after it went the Cysion path instead of that of the civ crafter. I had the ideas. And to this day you trust the guy who can code but cant crank code instead of the reverse.
I guess maybe their logic was “It’s not a Chinese split because China isn’t going away like the Indians civ did” but yeah it gives a disingenuous impression. I’m not terribly hyped for this DLC anymore ngl; i’d have much rather had Bai, Tanguts, and Tibetans than these 3 kingdom civs.
There were people thinking I was getting all bent out of shape about V&V. I explained to them then, if they’re willing to lie to us once, they’ll be willing to lie to us again.
“They only lied about V&V because they need some quick money, and AOE3 because that game is not popular. Period. Not anymore. They are going to do their real job really well! Next one, next one is going to be really great!”
I would love to copy & paste my comment in another post here (Sorry if this is not allowed):
This is equal to making each warlords from the Japanese Sengoku Period (which lasted longer than the 3 kingdoms) into a separate civs when they are all represented by Japanese. Speaking of which, I heard V&V have 2 scenarios with customs civs to represent all those warlords. Do we really need those as actual civs?
The Three Kingdoms period was a post-Han dynasty civil war that lasted around 100 years, then united into the Jin dynasty. So now this is basically 4 Chinese civs presenting the very same Han people, and OG Chinese’s “Chu Ko Nu” is literally a weapon named after Zhuge Liang from Shu, so 2 civs to represent the very same kingdom existed for only ~50 years.
And Tibetan and Dail lost their chance to be put in the game for this.
For all my love for AoE2, and grateful to the devs for updating the game. I actually considering not buying this DLC, as a protest, or something, I don’t really know how I should think.
I was frightened by the news I’ve saw tonight.
Only mad man could grow ideas like that: replace promised medieval civs with ancient ones, and eat the words “we won’t split China but add civs around it.”
I think this game isn’t created for me from now, since I couldn’t understand its devs at all.
If the civs are designed around a region, I mean, China is a big place, people lives in northern steppe have a very different culture from the people living in the southern shoreline. If that is a Chinese split designed in similar direction, then I can understand
But you don’t design civ for one specific kingdom. That’s AoE3 & 4 but not AoE2
