The most clunky aspect of control could be easily fixed

Coming from Starcraft and pretty much every other RTS, it feels very clunky to have your units slow down to stick with their buddies. Even groups of only one unit type will slow down until they can walk side by side. Starcraft streamers cite this as a big turnoff. Warcraft 3 had this enabled by default and the first thing everyone does is turn it off as soon as they find out they can.

Easy solution: Simple toggle option like warcraft 3. Units now run to the destination at top speed and form up there. I guarantee you that if this is implemented, 99% of players will enable it and never look back.

Other solutions:

  1. An extra formation, a non-formation where units just run to the destination area as best they can, like Starcraft. Not as good as the above, but even this feels better than having your units slow down.

  2. A ā€˜please just goā€™ button you can press to make units stop slowing themselves or walking backward during the current move command.

If you want to get extra-fancy, Beyond All Reason goes a step farther with the formations, allowing you to hold the button when giving a move command, and drag to set a formationā€™s destination facing. By the way, in BAR, your units never slow down due to their formations, because itā€™s terrible.

unfortunately not even Age of Empire has this feature (at least not Aoe2DE) -.- really no clue why, it would be so important ā€¦

I suggested something similar last week:

Yeah, It feels really bad not having your units go immediately the right way when you tell them.

There is the old joke saying that you are advancing in the opposite direction rather than calling it retreating. In this game that joke is real. You really canā€™t retreat; only advance in the opposite direction. Any back-line units you have selected will promptly go towards the enemy so they can be in the back of your formation, which is actually advancing in the opposite direction rather than retreating.

btw I made a mod for the ā€œno formationā€. you can find it by searching for this term or also for ā€œSerpā€ to see all my mods

No idea why this is not an option. It hurt a lot of people that only use a single control group.
