(Maybe this has to go in bug report, or maybe they appear as intended, I don’t know.)
I checked the new castles in the editor, first I must say they look gorgeous, but I also got the impression some of them are unusually big. So I verified, and I can confirm that quite a few of them look bigger than all former castles.
I took for references the central european castle (all original castles are very bulky) and the mediterranean one (probably the biggest in the game before this update).
Among the new castles, I think the biggest offender is the gothic one: It is significantly taller and wider than the italian one:
Funnily enough, many “barbarian”/steppes castles are quite large compared to the former castles (altough I like their aesthetic a lot):
The Huns castle is actually so large that units can step on it:
(which is also a issue for the Aztecs pyramide, but as a pyramide it is very large at its base without being that imposing)
Maybe this is a design choice from the devs, but in-game it feels weird that these civs, that were definitely not the greatest builder, get such large castles.
A last example: the malian castle (already a large one) compared to the new berber castle. The latter is wider and taller, but another reason why it looks bigger is that ~1 quarter of the malian castle is very tall (the large tower), whereas ~3 quarters of the berber castle is very tall.
I wonder what you guys think of this, maybe I’m nitty-picky. I get the impression this is a general tendency, in comparison most castles that came after de look very reasonable in size, and there is quite a contrast between both generations (compare the tatars and persians castles).
