Maybe someone has already answered this, and I know it’s not really relevant to the discussion, but anyway… this is incorrect. The skirmisher/javelineer was indeed used in the Middle Ages. You can check it out here:
By your own logic, you’re cutting off the fun of those who won’t have any by these civs being in game. Don’t be a hypocrite, many of us complaining are doing so exactly because we want to have fun with everything the game has to offer. The way these ‘civs’ are right now, we’re not going to be able to.
No, you are asking for remove the civs from the civs roster. You don’t like it, don’t use it. But let me play with them.
That, right there. You’re advocating on ruining mine and others’ fun by wanting your way. By your own logic, don’t do that.
And, by the way, I’m not advocating on their deletion. I want them to have the Chronicles treatment. That means not only do they get their own mode, but there are settings in-game right now that allow Chronicles civs to mingle with base game civs in non-ranked environments. You don’t lose access if you host games allowing all civs. And plenty of people do, btw.
Well that’s a javeliner. It’s also classified as a skirmishing unit. Which is correct.
However it’s not our skirmisher in the game. It’s intent to herass heavy Infantry.
And interestingly in that it’s described what would have been the idea fit for the game: The shield wall.
Ofc this only should have been given to (mostly northern) european civs but we have other regionally inaccurate units already. At least a shieldman would have made more sense as a anti-archer unit than the current skirmisher AND even worked better with respect to balancing.
Ofc at all ages skirmishing tactics were used - just the specific unit we have in the game currently not in the middle ages. Or at least not to a degree that comes even close to the importance in the game.
So… we have:
- Skirmishes being a tactic that could be done by any unit and used by every army in history.
- Javelins being used almost all over the planet.
Imo Ensemble wanted to kill two birds with one stone here, by combining the two ideas in a single unit common to all civs.
Yes, it is from here (and other answers) that my reasoning that the swordsman should occupy the role of this “shieldman” in the other thread came.
And like the situation above, the shield wall tactic is certainly not limited to them, but yeah it is more iconic with the Vikings or other Germanic people, so they could be a UT maybe?
Swordsmen werent really a thing for the vast majority of the middle ages. Spearmen didnt die immediately to anything that wasnt on a horse
Skirmishers are far from being a problem. Their logic is simple, they can fire and cover themselves at the same time, thats why they are anti archer
I will have to deal with it in my games and watching streams
With just a little bit of work they can at the very least fix the Wei and Khitan
Just put them into chronicles and you can play with them as much as you want. Unless you want to force them into everyone in multiplayer ranked.
