That’s what I said
I have never played with brightness settings in any game. My opinion is that they change the brightness of light that exists in the scene. ( ok, some scenes might have more than one source of lights - or a plate light in the hole scene ). I expect this is what it means to change the brightness in a game. The result from an action like this, will have similar effect with what I posited. Even shadows will not change because the source of light has not change position. I have made some games with unity, so I know the logic behind this. ![]()
I might overreacted. I took an image with so much zoom out. ![]()
I think we will agree that other screenshots have a lot of visibility. Example:
I didn’t say that CoH3 graphics are bad. I just said that are for a different game. You need a lot of zoom to see units etc. They are not for an Age game. For the same reason I would say that although AoE4 graphics are great (this is my opinion) they are not for CoH3. This game needs to give the essence of ambush all over the air etc. And devs know it, so they have flags above units. Its another game type practically.
Where did I attack the people making the argument?
And this
The first one was to express my utter surprise at Sug’s claim, if you view that as an attack that’s on you. In the second one I called the ARGUMENT flimsy, so how the Hell is that an attack on the people making the argument? Sheesh.
Somebody is grouchy, jeez
I don’t know, I might be completely wrong, but it is my belief that people tend to become “grouchy” when wrongfully accused. Just a tiny bit, maybe.
I can accept that you can recognize the units of BfME in the image I posted. Before 15 years when I played it I guess I would also recognize these units. But for me now, it is a blur. Now they do not tell me anything although I played the game a lot in the old days… when I was younger… ah… ![]()
PC: If you recognize the units this is something that varies between people. If you say that you also prefer the graphics of BfME more than AoE4, although this is still a relevant opinion, I might thought that you are not an objective observer. It is human impossible in my opinion someone likes more this blur image… ![]()
There is one interesting article.
Our cover story is about the explosive Company of Heroes 3 and how Relic has returned to save the RTS genre. This one will blow your socks off.
Let that sink in, they don’t even mention AoE4, so insignificant it is.
They see Company of Heroes 3 as the RTS to save the genre.
There is one significant difference, they did mention themselves, their mayor focus is the PvP and competitive aspect of RTS, and as we had to see by their previous work, it usually comes along with a lot of downsides and disadvantages.
Yet again what people would like to see get better by RTS,
simply isn’t happening, at least apparently not by AoE4.
Base build is a thing people would like to see get better, not stay same or even worse get less.
As we can see, again all official material, they didn’t add lot to the tech tree. Seeing tier 3 to have just 3 new buildings and tier 4 to contain only 1 building, does not look like an improvement you would expect 20 years later.
To see more Tactics and Strategy, you should introduce into RTS more new Units and Buildings across all the factions, Tactics and Strategy are based on possible choices. But apparently they have once again, try this Asymmetrical E-sports doctrine, where you have less stuff, that was redesigned to better memorize make same moves, which is always bad for RTS.
MOBA and E-Sports elements influence they did mention themselves in interviews. People don’t like fast gameplay, in videos so far we have seen units not to have a big durability. Units seem not to keep proper formations, stay at certain distance next to each other by movements and combat, this leads to a blob impression. People really don’t like unit limits, but it’s very official AoE4 is merely designed to have max 200 unit limit.
How should I better put it? Apparently, once E-Sports and PvP is the main focus, RTS just can’t be fun, as they have to be for it, from their publisher perspective, to be boring. AoE4 advertisement, just doesn’t make it look like AoE4 will be here an exception, as it has exactly the same premise as Grey Goo, Act of Aggression, Dawn of War 3, Year Of Rain and Stronghold: Warlords, as it won’t be capable to respond to people’s wishes and expectations.
Pike man sitting on back of elephant has its legs disappearing into elephant’s body
Please don’t say he is indian so he is sitting with his legs crossed like padmasana.
Not every single screen shot but in few screenshots mounted units missing it’s legs. It’s 95 gb game!
Overall from what we have seen, as I showed you, they are doing good.
It looks a lot better than AoE2 and AoE3, what are you talking about? People asked for better base building not more buildings. I don’t want a buttload of buildings that I have no idea what some even are. I get enough of that from citybuilder sims
Starcraft 2 has suddenly disappeared or something?
Also, CoH2 released with only Germany and Soviets and they didn’t have many more units than AoE3 and AoE4 have. Actually, we don’t even know the full extent of AoE4 units, there could be a ton more that we don’t know, because we HAVEN’T SEEN ANY GAMEPLAY YET. I will give you this, the devs are sucking at their communication
No, Multiplayer is capped at 200, they mentioned nothing about singleplayer. Don’t twist their words to make a point
I know they mentioned it but I see nothing that looks like a MOBA game to me
Fast gameplay like AoE3? It is obviously going to be closer to AoE2, you can see in the screenshot above you have a raid going on, just like AoE2. The real fighting doesn’t happen until later in the game
Again, Starcraft 2 isn’t fun? What world are you living in?
That’s some bad clipping from both the man on the back, but the front guy also has some clipping. Next, they’ll say that this isn’t the “updated build, it’s the old build from 7 months ago” or something ridiculous like that.
Like some people have said, there are rumors that the extra 45 GB is an Ultra graphics DLC
According to Steam, it’s a 50 GB game.

yu can basically play anything on these machines^^
Considering we have meanwhile the year 2021 out there, quite a lot of things did change, where apparently the current development team didn’t catch up.

First of, we can very easily track down, than even Starcraft2 is loosing population.

The mayor mistake by put PvP in the focus,
means the game will be evaluated by how many people do play it.
While in a single player designed game, it does not matter, my horse in Skyrim, Zelda, Witcher, Assassin’s Creed will wait for my adventures, even years later. By PvP designed game, you kind of need the people to play it or it wont be fun.
I agree with the OP. Having “catering to a wider audience” as a design goal is always a mistake. The only thing that you need for your game to succeed is for it to be a good game. It has to be deep, intricate, and fun to play. You do not attract players by “catering” to them, you attract them by having a great game. DoW3 should be a massive lesson for Relic, it tried to incorporate things from mobas, went for cartoony graphics, and among all that catering to audience it forgot to be a great game and had no audience in the end.
Aiming for esports is also wrong, esports emerge organically when a game is great, you cannot create it by aiming for it because if your game is not great, I will not have players wanting to play it. And if your game is great, no need to aim for esports, because players will come themselves and start to compete.
The same applies to graphics, I feel like there’s still this mindset in Relic that by making it more cartoony and brighter, they will attract this bigger audience, but this is simply bull****. There is exactly zero evidence for this, I still cannot understand how this mindset can be a thing. There are many successful games with cartoony graphics, yeah, but same is true for realistic graphics. And there are even more failed games with cartoony graphics, again, same for realistic ones. The only rules I can think of that apply to graphics are:
- The artstyle has to be good - can be both realistic or cartoony, doesn’t matter, but has to be good
- Artstyle has to fit the game - if it does not, it breaks immersion and disconnects people from the game.
You just cover these two and you have great graphics. Thinking about “attracting wider audience”, on the other hand, can only make you forget these two and make your game worse as a result. So please Relic, abandon this mindset, it is incorrect and can only hurt your game. Give us a great game with great graphics and the audience will come in hordes by themselves, don’t cater to them.
We want AoE4 to be successful, we really do, so just take your lesson from DoW3 and make another great RTS that you can be remembered for as a studio.
Keep up the good work!
