The water meta is wierd

Could the water snowball effect be reduced by making warships cost two population space? I think this could make micro and navy composition more important in the late game. Some scenarios would require re-balancing. I’m also thinking about restricting warships from entering deep water unless new technology is researched (Keel), this would allow michi style water maps and some more strategic variety.

I would also like to see following ships:

Ram Galley
These ships available from Feudal age could attack enemy ships with charge attack dealing 2x damage then continues slowly dealing standard damage. Sounds like a fun micro to me. there is a charge mechanic in the genie editor, not sure why it’s not utilized more by the game.

Mangonel Galley
Available since Castle Age intended to counter massed galleys/longboats in the same manner mangonels counter massed archers. Weak to fire/demo ships. They would be also a nice alternative for civs lacking cannon galleon.

People dislike AoE3 due to some reasons like this.

Just a limit and everyone has to research it. I don’t get its strategic variety.

Sounds good. Probably the unique unit of a potential navy civ.
Especially the mangonel galley seems to fit the Romans and Byzantines very much.

If there is a chance, the fire ships should be the unique units of Byzantines and then create a new ship having the animation that able to approach the oppose ship, board and combat to replace the position of fire ships for other civs.

Not really, on most maps ships could just sail around deep waters like land units can just walk around forests. But it would create chokepoints, surprise attacks and allow some booming on special maps. Currently difference between medium and deep water isn’t even visually noticeable, though.

The idea is to make water more interesting for every civ. But ram galley would be a nice replacement for Fire Galley.
