Neither the former not the latter is built by the Molgols, and the latter was even an important base of the Chinese to fight against the Mongols.

Given that they are nomads, I don’t mind a fictional element to their buildings as long as it fits their culture. So as Cumans and Huns.

I would always like to argue for the Japanese.
The current East Asian castle doesn’t not fit the Japanese either! There are many elements that are not common in Japanese castles, such as some designs similar to Chinese gatehouses.

Himeji Castle, Kumamoto Castle, Osaka Castle, … even the Shogunate in AoE3! There are so many solid references. Do not keep the current one.

Diaoyu Fortress was built during the Southern Song against the invading Mongols, and hence I don’t think it should be the model of the Mongol castle.

Nice picks. Although, instead of getting inspiration from specific castles, I’d rather see original designs based on the overall style of the civ, even if it impliates mixing styles belonging to different time periods.
