This patch is simply a disaster

The balance team for AoE IV claims that the purpose of this change is to introduce fresh changes, which is an outright lie. The siege engines and crossbowmen have become just like in AoE II, which is not “fresh” at all. Why do you cling to those outdated ideas to change the game? This failed change has reduced the number of AoE IV players to less than half of AoE II, which is shameful.

The balance team for Age of Empires IV is still claiming that they will adjust the balance, but give it up. Your patch has changed the fundamental gameplay of the game, and the current gameplay is simply not enjoyable.

Finally, I really don’t understand the point of weakening the speed at which all civilizations gather food, forcing every player to have to deal with the damn 40+ farmers farming. Such self-righteous changes serve no purpose other than to prove your own stupidity.

Do you play AoE2? Crossbowmen are just upgraded archers.

There isn’t even the concept of light vs heavy units and counters to those groups in AoE2.

This patch did make siege a bit more like aoe2. It is still quite different though.

I don’t think you know what self righteous means…

None of your post constitutes anything approaching a balance analysis. Would you like to try expanding on claims made?

Springalds are basically scorpions now, rangers and mangonel interaction is almost the same as longbow onager, snake powder for bonus vs infantry is a dead ringer for HC’s bonus damage vs infantry, and the bombard /culv interaction is almost the same as the role BBC’s fill in aoe2.

There was the whole water rework a while ago too - all that needed a change was the Rus lodya nonsense, but they cut and paste aoe2 into it again.

Recent civs have also borrowed things in an awkward way - malian javelins come to mind. Janissaries in with gunpowder in age 3 (really should have been archers). Byz cataphracts - gotta beat camels, gotta beat inf, trample damage. Japanese - well thats closer to aoe3. The overall trend that new civs must be batshit OP and then get nerfed to dirt.

At any rate, while there are still alot of differences left (for now) it’s kinda bad how development seems to be taking continued steps towards cut/pasting other titles. Worse is that there seems to be no indication of a change of thought despite player losses.

I agree with you. This patch is a disaster. Now we simply can not contre siege. Playing aoe4 is not fun with these siege engine rework

Context? I imagine team games where nothing happens until Imp with maxxed out population. If that’s the case, have you tried Bombards?

Half the people seem to have reached the opposite conclusion, that siege is now worthless.

I bet the truth is somewhere in the middle…

It works with bombards. But only on age 4. On age 3 its hard to counter a mass mangonels.

Yes ! You probably right !

If opponent masses Mangonels in Age 3, just go Age 4. They’re quite expensive and not that good in Age 3.

Agreed. If I wanted more AOE2, would’ve just gone back to playing AOE2, which I already have. Why would I waste money on a new game that’s TRYING to be AOE2?

By that logic, any changes in IV that were inspired by III means people are wasting money on a game trying to be AoE III.

A game is more than the sum of its parts.

I’ve got some misgivings about the patch as well, lord knows I’ve made many posts about it, but the increase in tempo with hot fixes and dev blog posts is much appreciated.

Balance and meta still feel off to me though. They keep on taking feedback and making regular adjustments then I’m sure it’ll shake out in time for the DLC.
