Three Kingdom Heroes vs Persian War Elephants

I swear some peapel think these heroes are unstoppable. The way their talk about them, they might as well have 10000 HP and 1000 atack. But they aren’t. They cost 500 food and gold and lose to Persian War elephant. I did this little test with Post Imperial, and I tested all three heroes with their civs, with each one the War Elephant won.

Spending 500 food and 500 gold if you lose the unit would pretty much cost you the game in some situations. So, they aren’t really that strong. They aren’t giant robot with giant lazer blaster like Liberty Prime.

Before.

And after.

Edit let’s how 5 Spanish Paladins do. 300 food and 375 gold.

Not one Paladin lost.

It’s not about their individual stats, but their auras.

You mostly pay for the aura indeed.

Eyeballing it, they get convincingly beaten by 3 paladins (half the cost) and against 2 paladins (a third the cost) it would be close.

Cool.

Still not playing AOE2 again until the heroes are removed from rank. I don’t want them here and they don’t belong.

There is no mathematical argument you can offer the playerbase because we are against the very idea in the first place.

Yeah I was gonna say people might mainly use them for the buff/debuff aura.

Also, can heroes be converted?

Not since Conquerors

The aura is the main benefit, and it’s pretty expensive for the aura as well. You have comparable auras in other civs (Saracen monks after castle UT, Celt Stronghold, Roman Centurion double aura, caravanserai, maybe more). The hero units do have a very respectable range on their aura, but I don’t think they’re as strong as the auras other civs have.

I do not consider the heroes overpowered by any means. But I also don’t think balance concerns are the main opposition to heroes. I could see a new game mode option being added which brings a hero unit to every civ - though the amount of effort that would take is enough that I think a generic hero unit would be the only way to add them quickly. If a new skirmish option was added, then the hero units could be removed from the 3K civs generally (thus removing them from ranked).

Personally, I’m fine with the heroes. I don’t think they’ll come out in most games with a 3K civ anyways.

The heroes’ power lies in their aura rather than their own fighting performance.
On the other hand, they are opposed basically because they are directly specific historical figures.

Rename all of them to “Lord” can help. Or better find non-hero replacements for them that the limit can be more than 1.

They are thematically and aesthetically inconsitant with the rest of the game as are their civilisations. That’s the main issue.
