Time to nerf the Huskarl or changing the Goths bonus

That’s a lot of changes. I think this balance mod would be extremely interesting to watch, if some pro players want to hop in to take a break from good’ol Arabia.
Would you like to make it happen?

And now a bad civ is even worse. Yay for goths who don’t even see much pro use.

Yet another idea that does not create any reason to build longswords in castle age in more situations (and how could it be, only a monstruous overbuff could achieve this) Your buff only makes dark, feudal and imperial age strategies that are already good better.

So they end up with a worse situation than what they had in AoC 11

Breaking news: FU champions DON’T need supplies to beat Goths. Anyway this situation only applies to 3 civs, Chinese, Mongols and Cuman, who all have their way around Goths.

What is kinda sad is that none of these changes would affect how LEL games go. +4 food cost on huskarl and -10 food on champion won’t change the fact they love playing Sim city until post-imp and not making the right counter unit. Just like siege engineer won’t change the fact that for other players the civ gets massively shafted.

The OP could have had a point if only he knew how to argument, after all Goths balance does tend to be a mess. I can only answer that nerfing the civ into the ground isn’t a good idea.

As of the Huskarl itself, it’s fine. Really, if the cataphract, a cav that counteres anti-cav, and the genoese xbow, an archer that counters cav, are fine, then we can have an anti-archer infantry unit.

Instead of Huskarl, I hate Arambai more. I really don’t understand why the production team allow a range unit with fast speed can even own higher attack than melee units. Unlike Conqueror, Arambai cost wood only but not food!

Cavalry counters infantry…Huskarls only have 1 higher damage than a longsword, at additional cost. If you use melee units, you will beat them down as if they were expensive longswords. Elite Huskarls are slightly WEAKER than champions at melee (1 less damage, and 1 less armor) - so get knights/paladins. Sure, they will spam cheap spears as a counter, but guess what - those can be killed easily by arrows

A nice group of onagers counters pretty much everything that groups, also. If all they are making is infantry, thats an easy group shot or more for onagers. I once made a guy rage quit because he was spamming 2h’s and my group of 20 onagers 1 shot his whole army. Probably one of my favorite aoe2 memories from back in the day <3

Another good strategy is to just keep them on the defensive. Goths cant build stone walls, so it’s easy to get in on them if they havent attacked you yet. If you let them play aggressively they will out-number you by design. Put pressure on them before they get castle/imperial and their economy allows them to spam barracks full of anything and you have a good shot at not having to worry about it much anyway. Infantry need food, so hit their farms. That will also slow villi production, especially if you can get them to ring their town bell often.

Also worth noting that attacking them before they get a castle up means they cant have huskarls yet. Scout them to see if they have spears - if not - throw a few knights on them and watch for the castle. Do whatever you can to deny them their castle.

Late game Goths are borderline op, I agree. But their early game defense is their weakness. Exploit the weakness - dont change the units. If they double barracks at the drop of feudal, you are going to have your hands full - but that’s where you show them you are better. If you let them get imperial with 20+ barracks…it’s not IMPOSSIBLE to win, but good freakin luck. In that case I’d try to kite their army and target the barracks more than the infantry. Infantry will come back at almost no cost. If you kill all their barracks but lose your army in the end - they have to remake all those barracks if they are going to continue production, wheras you on the offense should already have been rapidly replacing your losses. Fight whats left of his army, and dont let him build any more barracks. Easier said than done, but if you can make it happen - its easier to fight 1 army twice than it is to fight 5 infinite screens of them…

Frustrating as it may be, find someone who can do customs with you that knows the Goths really well. Play against them REPEATEDLY until you figure it out. I believe that eventually, you will! Regardless of how you go about it, that is hands down the best way you are going to figure out how to fight them.

Worth noting that any time I play a team game, I always feudal rush the goth player first, if there is one. At least the fighting is in their town instead of mine, and I can kind of keep an eye on what they are building while I’m pushing the rush. Useful for my team to see what’s happening to, so they can build and aid accordingly.

Also worth noting that you CAN use units that your civ doesn’t have bonuses to - even Britons can make cavaliers. Kite the infantry with them while the longbows are shooting behind walls. Better than spamming longbows against a goth player that is definitely gonna spam huskarls vs Britons. If you can hit the back of their base with petards and surprise them with the cavaliers, you can force them to start making more spears instead because they wont have seen that coming (just keep running the cavalier around wherever the spears arent…make him waste time by chasing you)

Good luck, and sorry for the long reply - but I feel your frustration and I want to give you as much as I can to help because seeing an enemy playing goths gets me on edge more than most things in this game, but sometimes we win~

This should be printed in gold letters on pretty much anything AoE related.

Also don’t balance things for the sake of visibility, love of a unit or hate of a unit. Personal preference should have no place in balance changes.

Never town bell, never surrender!

(But we get what CloudStrife says: giving the other person idle time and lots of villagers to micromanage is good.)

goths r a broken civ. they should be removed from the game completely. im not joking.

So, after goth is removed, what’s next?
Back to mirror Hun wars in AOC?
I’m not joking either.
