Too much gold on units by imperial Age

In AOE4 gold is a recurring theme, liquid gold or gold filaments used for accents, portraits etc. vtis is really great for UI and other things but on units making them gold looks very bad.

I will be great if we can get more natural looking units instead of gold plated units.

In AOE 2 each age has units and their upgrades doesn’t make them gold plated. They just wear armors that is supposed to be used in battle.

The worst part is many things have this shimmer and glow effect also in gold and thus resulting is a very smudged looks all together.

I hope the AOE4 team goes back and change the gold colour on many units to make them look like they belong in a battlefield than a showcase of collectibles.

Thanks

I’ve always hated the gold symbols on the outside of the ‘gameplay area’ box.

They’re ugly and serve absolutely no purpose.

Game would look so much better without them.

Yes, I hate this effect so much. I hope they move it to a key that you can toggle so that it isn’t always on.

I guess I agree, but you have to admit that it makes for good gameplay to have such an immediate recognizable feature on such units. At some point, you ought to ask, what side of the game should these decisions favour? Immersion or gameplay?

And while I’m often on the side of immersion, some things just make too much sense to ignore. In this instance, it isn’t reasonable to assume players are well studied in armour enough to recognize the distinction by themselves. Nor can we assume that players are always looking at the name of the units they are fighting against.

But a little bit of gold, signifying some elite status? I think it is the best way to go about it. Could some units feature less gold? Yea, definitely. But, this is very nitpicky.

We need an example to see how units look without gold colours it may be bad.

I dislike playing Japanese for the reason of Banner units giving all the units this obnoxious glow effect.

Playing AOE2 Chronicles units like the strategos or centurion give out area buffs without an effect and I don’t have a problem with that.

I hope it’s on the menu in future DLC. When Sultans Ascend released they added a ton of abilities to the game and changed the icons to purple to help them pop more in the UI.

Whether that’s changing the effect a unit has or keeping the effect from being visible at all, it’s going to be even more necessary as more unique features get added to the game.

It’s overstimulating as is.

I thought I was the only one. I find that so distasteful to have all your army glow throughout the game.

Just move it to a layer that you activate by pressing a hotkey ffs.

Gold is actually making things difficult read hence the post. It’s not about old time not using gold for war. Gold is used across AOE 4 and readability of the battlefield is getting hampred. Waypoint is gold, buff gold, influence gold, icons gold, units wrapped in gold, relic gold smoke.

It’s really tiring to look at.

Use of normal colurs like in the castle age is enough. I don’t think imperial age means we need to have gold all over the place.
