Unfair matchmaking

Hello dear Age of Empires community! I’m not sure this is in the correct topic, but I assume this to be the case.

I’m a fairly new and noobish Age of Empires player. I mean. I do have some experience. Know my Fast Feudal and Fast Castle build order. Basic counters. Utilizing hotkeys. I would say I know my ropes in order to play not like a noob. Now. Matchmaking. I don’t know, but ever since me and my friend started playing, it got less and less enjoyable. However, I’m actually making this topic to discuss the 1v1 matchmaking. I will just show you my stats, so you can get a rough estimate at where I am.

Those are my stats. Now. As you can see most of my matches are Team games. With my mate having done all the games with me, we’re much of the very same skill-level. However, when I did my first 1v1 today I was surprised. Not pleasantly mind you. Why? Because I was matched with this guy.

I’m not entirely sure. But it doesn’t appear to be exactly fair for someone with 30 games to play against someone who easily has 30 times more the amount of games then I do.
You can imagine how that match-up went. Now. After this I don’t even know if I want to queue for another match.
The Elo that was shown to me was 944 (+0) after the game, and since 1000 is the average, I assume the matchmaking is fairly poor here. Because. What reason would the game have to put the starting-elo around someone who would have almost 1000 games?

1.there are not enough players to match people with the same number of games. So it matches by ELO, that’s what the rating is for.
2. As far as I’m aware your starting ELO is always 1000. So the discrepancy is only about 50. Yes maybe still a bit high, but nothing uncommon.
3. With 900 Team rating you can expect your 1v1 rating to drop below that. There is a reason why you won’t be ranked before you did 10 games. The system needs some data to rank you. But your matches should get better the more you play.
4. I can relate to you and this problem but I had the opposite phenomenon. Winning my first 10 games straight. But that tells us how hard it is to find a good match without any data. Now that I’m rated around 1370 my Winrate gets closer and closer to 50%
5. I hope you hang on and keep playing the ladder, yes it might be frustrating at first, but like I said before. With more games they should be more evenly matched

Expect the first 10 games to be the toughest
After that you will get the 50/50 chances to win/lose against your opponents
Some says that take about 30 games to get to your real ELO (1v1)
Keep playing and be ready to lose badly, it is the only way to improve actually

It seems like you dont really know how match making currently works. For 1v1 it works fine, but you have to go through the first games.

Everyone starts with 1000 Elo. This is the average elo. The system tries to learn your elo in the first games. This will meant you will win or lose much elo in every game, untill you are about your true elo and get matched against players with equal skill.

The number of games does not reflect your skill, so that isnt taken into account when matching people. Based on the games i played i also dont think it is needed to use that in the matching process. After those 10 placer matches you will get mostly good matches. The number of games someone played doesnt really matter at that point.

This means you can have up to 10 games that can be quite one sided. But every time the skill skill will be much closer. In the end the system knows for example your rating is around 700 elo, so you will be matched against others with raing 700 elo. At that point almost every game would be very close and fun to play.

So you just need to go through those probably at most 10 games before the system has learnt your skill and you will be matched against equally skilled players. From that point on you will notice that your winrate will be around 50%.

Conclusion: You might have to face some other tough games, but after those your will get mostly good games.

Alright. So far everything seems to be quite enlightening. I will then play more games until I have a handful and hope that the situation will be good :>

It’s just strange to me that (I assume chess-elo is used here) the starting Elo will match you with someone with almost a thousand games. I’m not sure but I don’t think that’s the case in chess? Either way. Time to go play some more games :>
Thank you for all the quick replies <3

Its not about number of games played.

Its about the S K I L L of the player. Incredibly vast majority of 1v1 players sits around the 1000 elo mark.( this online demographic is available)

So that is used as a bench mark for entry level players since statistically speaking they should be roughly 1000. Of course there will be outliers and you should quickly get knocked down to the right elo.

But match making doesn’t work on voodoo magic so it can’t predict whether you are going to be one of the average /good players BEFORE you have even played any matches.

The advantage of this system is it reduces the amount of grinding a skilled player needs to do before they reach their correct elo.

On a side note this isn’t a true elo stat anyway… The team game one is almost completely off, but the 1v1 is more accurate.
