Just like aoe3 where the british raj portrays india.
And yes the most important thing, we shouldn’t stop recommending the devs for what reasonable civs we want in future (apart from delhi sultanate). So that they do hear us. Otherwise there will be expansion but not of our liking. (i.e., continuous three european DLCs for aoe2 de)
I agree
True ! Popular Civs Usually overdominate, the forums ! As for example, aoe3 forum is basically:
- 50 % Buff/Nerf Japan/Sweden (lol)
- 30 %other civs
- 10 % Bugs
- 10 % unpopular civs as India/Iro others
Good post and good points Juggernaut. I’m also convinced that Delhi is a logical choice as it played a big role during the timeframe.
So historically they’re good. But I’m just feeling that they’re not that attractive to a contemporary audience, especially Indian people. History did not go into the direction of complete islamification of India, instead they freed themselves of foreign occupation in 1948 and then had one of the bloodiest wars in history to sort out the Muslim-Hindu division. That’s why I’m still surprised they would pick an Islamic faction to represent this region, cause I don’t think many Indians would prefer one from a contemporary perspective. And I guess it shows in this topic.
There are too much indian factions for one game to show that is the main issue with adding a generic indian civi or few main once.
Same goes for Arabian factions and More over to Europeon factions!
Nope!
A Civilisation is not just only architechture and wars! its also the choices, of NOT Going to war! and Cultural and Scientific progress! and Constantly driving away the continuous invading armies!
U simply can’t potray a Civ which has only defended without an intent of extension, in the same light as the other greedy ones
While the perspective of civs which were not satisfied with their own land is well defined in the game , the game dont capture the full extent of civs that didnt have the greed for other lands, outside of their traditional sphere of influence (i,e, Most of Asian civs)
Europe has many factions so its decently represented.
How would arabs be showed as multiple factions? They have the same religion language and culture if im not mistaken.
Saladin is a kurd who led an army of bedouins.
Umm,
![]()
Im comparing the current aoe games, all of them have multiple european civis where as india is one.
which is more wrong from the below list?
Generic Indian civi aoe2
Delhi sultanate aoe4
British raj india aoe3
I dunno why are you bringing religion or modern politics here? Personally I would always put religion/ethnicity behind when it comes to learning history or any discussions behind it. Even after many pointed you out, you are just dragging this on over for no reason.
maybe the BJP must have got access to the forums lol, well said.
To All those people who are expecting future Indian civs to be added in the game …
I have Taj mahal to sell
How many Indian civs they added to aoe -2 - F…ing ZERO
Yeah it’s really sad to see they are ignoring the subcontinent which historically accounted for one-fourth of Medieval world’s population and GDP. It consisted of large number of different empires and kingdoms from it’s diverse population. It is very weird to lump up all of them into ONE weird umbrella camel civilization.
India needs more love and representation in the game.
I have looked into this issue a bit from my own vantage, and it appears that in 1000 CE, the Chola were the second largest empire in the world. In my view, they would make a very compelling case to be added into this game. I hope we see them one day.
The Cholas also had the longest empire. From 3rd century BCE to 1300 CE.
Japan Civilization is more better choose =)
Kannadigas (Kannada people) had five medieval era empires in a row:
Kadamba Empire
Chalukya Empire
Rashtrakuta Empire
Hoysala Empire
Vijayanagar Empire
Yes each of them has Empire Status: ![]()
Check the link to their wikipedia pages. They are such empire builders but are often ignored from medieval games and media. They gave a tough rivalry to the Tamils.

Tamil Military Organization under Cholas
Senai
Commanding Officer’s Rank : Senathipathi (Lord of the Army)
The standing army was organized into multiple Senai s. The composition of each depended on its deployment or stationed location and role. Normally, a Chola Senai was the largest organizational unit. At various times in its existence, the army had between one and three Senai s.
Thalam
Commanding Officer’s Rank : Thalapathi – equivalent to the naval rank of Kalapathi .
A Thalam usually contains:
- 3 Yanaipadai – elephant corps, each with 300–500 elephants.
- 3 Kudhiraipadai – cavalry corps, each with 500–1000 horses.
- 6 Kaalaatpadai – infantry corps, each with 2000–3000 men.
- 2 Thalpadai – auxiliaries, a mix of infantry & cavalry, each with 1000–2000 Men and 500–1000 Horses. They could be used as rear-guard units as well as a guerilla force in times of withdrawal.
- 2 Marathuvarani – medical corps of about 200–300 doctors with horse-drawn carriages and medical provisions.
- 1 or 2 Oosipadai – strike corps
Ani
Commanding Officer’s Rank’ : Anipathi (Lord of Group)
A Thalam is subdivided into various Ani s, which is one-third of a Thalam , with
- 1 Yanaipadai
- 1 Kudhiraipadai
- 2 Kaalatpadai
- 2 Thalpadai
The Army of the Cholas followed the ancient Indian tradition of Chaturangabala for organization andSadangabala for administration, the fourfold force and sixfold control. In its shortened form, it is called RathaGajaTuraPadai , where Ratha is the chariot, Gaja the elephant, Tura the horses, and Padai the infantry. It was said that an army with proportional growth of the said forces was a balanced and well-composed one.
In addition to the divisions, there were the Nadapu – the commissariat and Payanam – the admiralty and logistics. The addition to these, bureaucratic reforms revolutionized the Chola Army, resulting in victories on a massive scale.

The Portuguese traveler, Duarte Barbosa who arrived in India at Vijayanagara in 1504 A.D and stayed till 1514 A.D mentions that the kingdom of Odisha was comprised of very good fighting men and the king possessed a mighty army of foot soldiers besides mentioning the ongoing skirmishes between Vijayanagara and Odisha. He also mentions that northern extent of the Odisha kingdom was till the River Ganga which was often called as Gouri Gua by the Odias then and was important place for pilgrimage. Beyond the River was the kingdom of Bengal with which the King of Odisha was also at war often.
The Odia army was primarily comprised of the peasant militia called Paikas. The recruits were selected from different castes and tribes, but for infantry combatants, the ‘Chasas’ or the peasant class people were mostly selected from an age of 20 for military service because they were physically and mentally tough. They underwent rigorous and dangerous training and were ever ready for battles. Paikas were also the ancient most combatants of Odisha and the term is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Padadika’. Paikas used various mantras or chanting during warfare to keep their morals boosted even in the face of impending death.
Really very disappointed with how this came out. I mean Delhi Sultanate was more like a succession of 5 alien dynasties that managed to rule most of India for only 5 years (1330-1335) otherwise which they were only concentrated only in the Northern & North Western regions of India.
The timeline for which they ruled is also just too short (300 years) compared to other civs like Chinese who get 4 dynasties worth of time ranging to around 600-700 years.
And not to mention the things in the timeline they could have included if Indians were used. From the Tripartite Struggle & Kannauj Triangle, Cholas Naval expeditions to South East Asia, Rise of the Vijaynagara empire a hell lot of important historical events were missed just like that.
I really really hope that they modify this civ to cover these aspects or atleast introduce Vijaynagara Empire as a separate civ to showcase the missing parts. Chances are bleak though.
As an Indian player, I am disappointed with this representation. It really feels hurtful when you give so much attention to redesigning civs in DE editions to prove you care for authentic representations (Like Iroquois becomes Haudenosaunee & all that) and then you go and do this.
