Upgraded Monitor = Timescale, Lag, Performence Issues

Howdy! First time ever posting a bug. I’ve seen chatter about lagging and AMD issues, however I think my bug is specific enough to start a new thread.

I have the Anniversary Edition with the 4K Video Pack via Xbox Live. As far as I know, my hardware and software is up to date. Today, I went from an old non-HDMI monitor to a new Acer K273. Before my new monitor, everything was peachy. Game ran smooth with modest/high settings and I had absolutely no issues. Now, I’m experiencing some weird stuff that makes the game unplayable.

Let me give the hardware specs:

New Monitor: Acer K273
Old Monitor: Dell circa 2009
CPU: AMD FX 8350
GPU: AMD Radeon R9 390
RAM: 16GB DDR3

On to the issue. Right on launch, the frame rate takes a dive. It’s just blue fabric. I check my task manager and everything is under 60%. When I tab back into the game, the frames run faster/at a normal speed for a few seconds, then back to slow and choppy. I open a singleplayer game and the frame rate does not improve. However, when I tab task manager and place it over the AOE 4 window, the game runs like normal. Smooth as butter. Thinking it may be a window issue, I start messing with those settings. I usually play on Fullscreen Borderless. Every other setting was more or less the same EXCEPT “Windowed”: Performance improved on the home menu, however the gameplay animations were much faster than usual. The same thing happens when I hit the Windows key.

I actually took a quick break from writing this and the game worked fine for two-ish hours on high graphics. Just had to quit because the timescale and the lag came back towards the end of my game. It all “fixes” itself when I tab away.

My game version is: 6.0.787.0

Let me know if you need any more information from me! Thank you!

Apologies that you’re now seeing this @TransAmSpaceJam. The best thing to do would be to contact support with your DxDiag and warnings.log file.

Just off the top of my head, though, some things I’d look into:

  • Does your machine pick up your monitor’s model number? Or is it detected as a generic monitor? If that’s the case, it could be a driver issue.
  • Have you played with refresh rate settings at all?
  • I doubt it is this, but you could try a different HDMI cable; you might also try a different HDMI port; some PCs will have several

I’ll leave this open in case anyone else has tips that may help.

Sweet, I just reached out to the support team.

My monitor’s drivers are up to date and I think my cable is good because I don’t experience this issue with other games, only AOE 4. I will also say that stuff improved when I switched over to 75hz and set the limit there. However, the game still struggles randomly, particularly when it starts and when it ends.

Hopefully this is helpful for anybody out there.

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly!
