Thanks for breaking it down, PanCalvus! Over time, we’ll see how it goes. Although I appreciated it being locked away like a gift requiring a good amount of effort to obtain, perhaps I will enjoy better having earlier map domination.
Cannon Galleons vs. AI just typically lays waste to them if a lot of their city is near the shore, at which point it’s game over for them… assuming you dominate the seas. Especially if you have elite CGs. No, I’m not asking for a balance change
This is kind of annoying for long term players. As if I wanted to play a game that has the pace of starcraft, I’d play starcraft, not aoe2.
Starcraft is far faster then aoe2 in so many ways. its far more micro intensive and the action starts way sooner. aoe2 will never have that pace.
I’d like AoE2 to stay like AoE2 and not try to imitate other games. Even if it will never quite manage to imitate other games, the whole moving in that direction is what bothers me.

promoting attacking before castle age is not trying to imitate other games. one of the common complaints i have heard in the past is that nothing happened for the first twenty minutes. guess what? now stuff happens.

Stuff happens doesn’t sound like a necessarily good outcome. Besides there are things to do in the first 20 minutes. My problem is that we’re going from things to do, to faster and faster gg
maybe not - but when the first twenty minutes of gameplay used to be just eco management that’s pretty boring.
eco management is part of RTS… if you want action right away, MOBA might be of interest
eco management is part of rts. but it doesn’t mean that the first twenty minutes of a game has to be pure eco management.

It already isn’t. So point is quite moot.
Games should be larger because of the skills of players involved in the match, not because of game’s rules…
before though a large chunk of of dark and feudal were pure eco with almost no military action until you hit castle age.
Feudal fighting was always intended to be a part of the game, why else would the game give you units in feudal age? If games were consistently ending in feudal that would be a problem, but as is feudal aggression is the opening skirmishes that start to set the tone of the game. The only times feudal agro ends the game is when there is a mismatch of skill.
I play feudal agro every game, into heavy castle agro, typically into full blown imp wars, on Arabia. I don’t see games getting shorter, they can still be long if I’m playing against someone of equal skill and both of us are playing dynamically to adapt to what the other is doing. The best games are long games that start fighting early in my opinion.

@anon45959656 Ok now I don’t get it anymore, you’re in favour of the Inca trush (a strategy that literally makes the game end in feudal age) while also saying changes that make games shorter are bad.

I play StarCraft II and I have never ever had to micro-manage a unit because attack move works perfectly fine.
yeah a moving banelings into marauders works well. oh wait. and marines work well when a moved into banelings don’t they? oh wait.
It is usually a more lengthy affair at least, even if the age has not advanced beyond Feudal. I.e. I get to actually play the game. It was also an excellent meta-breaker for team games, it really helped the games stay a bit more interesting than 2x pocket cav 2x flank archer.
I do not disagree. But the way the game is heading, feudal fights end in gg more often. I want to actually play the game, not spend 33% of my time in queue.
lol some people qq and gg even in dark age, just because a boar and some sheep got lamed.
It’s a good change. I hated having to unlock a second tech and only THEN be able to start producing units.

Yeah or their computer blows up, but that’s not really something you can balance the game around lol. People may gg in feudal after losing a vil or two, but losing a vil or two isn’t actually game over, you can come back from that. Just because some people choose to quit early doesn’t mean we should rebalance the game so that no one has a bad feudal age and we can all keep playing till Castle age.
I’m not saying that all games need to reach Castle Age. But at the same time, if people don’t actually get to play the game beyond some quick rushes, the interest will quickly wane.
