Water re-rework proposal

Water should be simple.

Units

  • Slow all ship speeds to around 1.
  • Increase fishing ships’ work speed.
  • Increase the amount of resources trade ships can carry per a trip.
  • Reduce transport ship cost to 75W.
  • Remove the dock garrisoning system.
  • Ships within a 2-tile radius of a dock automatically heal by 0.1 hp/s.
  • Allows owned ships to be intentionally unowned (owned by Gaia). Unowned ships do not need population space, but can be re-owned by approaching. Of course, enemies can also own them.

Warships

  • Changes the names of Galley to Cog, War cog, and Galleon.
  • Only Cog can be trained in feudal age.
  • Hulk and Demo ship can be trained since castle age.
  • The compatibility relationship is “Hulk beats Cog, Cog beats Demo ship, and Demo ship beats Hulk.”
  • Sets the number of projectiles per an attack to 2 for hulk (castle age) and 3 for War hulk (imperial age).

Warship Graphics

  • Allow Cogs, Hulks, and Long boats to attack in any direction (no more strange turning around during the hit&away micro. they need stop for attacking).
  • Change Hulks’ attack animation to “once rope sling, repeated metal attack sounds.”
  • Apply the explosive-type demo ship graphic to Heavy Demo Ships only. Change its name to Demolition Ship.
  • Change the graphic of Demo ship in castle age to Fire Ships. Change its name to Fire Ship.

Unique Warships

  • Remove Fire Galleys and Dragon Boats. Fire Ship and Fast Fire Ship become Byzantine’s unique units named as Dromon.
  • Fire & Demo ship can be used with civs which have unique ships.
  • Buff Caravel as a heavy water scorpion which can attack seaside.

Siege Ships

  • Dromon and Catapult Ship are merged; spec is like Dromon, name is like Catapult Ship, it can be used with every civs
  • Delete Elite Cannon galleon. Cannon galleon gets the spec of Elite Cannon galleon. Cannon galleon can be used with civs who can use Elite Cannon galleon in today patch.

Technology

  • Fishing Line and Gillnets remain unchanged (Dock Tech).
  • Careening and Dry Dock increase HP of ships (Dock Tech).
  • Clinker Construction and Carvel Hull increase armor of ships by +1/+1 (University Tech).
  • Removed Siphons and Incendiaries.
  • Separate upgrades for Cogs, Hulks, and Fire & Demo Ships.
  • All upgrades can be reserched in University.
  • Circumnavigation gives only map revealing.
  • Thalassocracy upgrades Docks to Harbors.
  • Gurjaras can garrison Fishing Ships in Docks.
  • Nerf the civ bonuses for feudal Cogs. (Keep for castle & imperial Cogs)

What is the use of this mechanic?

You can make land army without deleting navy after winning water.

Disagree, water was way too simple. Island (and 99% of water maps) was basically a build order simulator since you only produce galleries (cogs in your case)

If player has already won on water whats the point of continuing the game?

Dude,

You have no right to take Fire Ships and Elite Cannon Galleons from dozens of civs just because you want to. You have to earn it and prove yourself first before even proposing such drastic changes.

A lot of civs have access to and bonuses for these ships for good reasons. These civs are balanced and fun to play with because they have access to these ships, bonuses, and new water techs.

@yuksely1992 os acting like they have the right to tell us what’s what. That fans don’t know anything while probably being unaware that most of the dev team were fan project makers or modders of civ crafters

there is usually land to fight over. on hybrid maps it isn’t uncommon that someone over invests in water, wins there, but then gets wiped on land and loses the game.

In that scenario this change from op dosent matter much person having superior land combat will win.

There are ways to use water control to win a game, but if an opponent is too far inland, then it’s limited to fishing - and sometimes not even that. Can’t fish if the opponent has destroyed all your docks, and fish alone rarely makes up for losing your land economy.

But overall, I don’t think these changes would ever occur - too much changed for no apparent reason, and in some cases reverting previous changes (again for no apparent reason). And some changes (like removing cannon galleons from civs that lack the elite upgrade) would hurt water balance significantly. I also see no reason to increase fishing ships work speed - fishing is already a pretty good investment.
