What can be done to salvage AoE4?

Remove Dark Age; add game time limit.

At this point after the current patch I do not have confidence that this is a team that can properly support an rts. I do not know the reason I say this simply based on these facts:

  1. gamer released with game breaking bugs and balance issues. ( it’s k maybe they fix with patch)

  2. the patches released fix bugs and cause new one’s

  3. lack of any usable communication… leading to shutting ranked down on a sale weekend with all of the US sitting at home!

  4. new patch released seems to completely go against what the devs have been saying in their comms.

  5. they say we don’t want u to rush thru ages we will then release a patch where HRE can IMP under 10 minutes!

As we go on this team has failed to build any confidence in the player base I am very sad at this this is my favourite game for a very long time.

RIP! Not playing a game where the devs are this disrespectful to a loyal player base. Just pathetic.

It took less than a weak post patch! Impressive update!

Think they need small balance patches. The balance was a lot better before.

Couple small buffs, nerfs for couple civs in early or late game. Can see on aoe4world which civs are good early, late game.

If you make 100 changes you have to spend another 3months balancing again. Its happen like 3 times already now we are starting again.

I mainly play 1vs1 rank, but casuals aren’t going to play the game with mainly balance changes as main new content for the game

data

Peor… pesa 83 gigabytes y eso si no instalas los vídeos en 4K en todos los idiomas, sino que vas a 217 GB xd…

Naval missions and treasures surely not xd…

Yes, in 15 years we are going to walk through the aoe 6 and surely it will be medieval again and will have the same problems of the 4 and will continue without going to surpass the aoe 2…ay Ensemble, you did know what the fans wanted…

Peak players were also slightly over 9k in June, before the patch, so if the patch was supposed to bring in new players, it didn’t work. Still, we have to wait until July is over to really tell.

PD: Peak players is a bad metric, you should be looking at average players. Peak players could be folks checking if there’s something new and then immediately shelving the game again.

And this is what is being said about AoE 4 in gaming sites along with this patch:

Decent-ish. Ouch.

Well, from -13% to almost +3% with just a balance update and a color selection feature… not great not terrible

I don’t expect a huge jump in the player numbers until a DLC is announce, that will be the real test for the game, be.

Agreed. Let’s wait and see. More players is always good. Could potentially drive more resources towards AoE4, better DLCs and more attention to future patches and persistent bugs.

yep but is borderline decent to mediocre

Inability to choose colors for friends or foes.
Homing arrows.
Bigger stone and gold mines.
Scout with special feature (AoeO can build outposts, Aoe4 gather sheeps).
Hotkeys problem (AoeO has too much, Aoe4 is not easy to remap).
Many voice acts (AoeO has more than 1000 sentences for just 1 civ? Aoe 4 is very noisy like a city indeed).
Both are very opposite to what they really meant (AoeO is a spin-off but sounds like and ideal replacement for Aoe1; Aoe4 is a sequel but looks very much like a spin-off with asymmetry from Aoe2).
I doubt that one day Aoe4 would be revived as fan project if “it fails without a chance of comeback”.
Somehow Aoe 4 sounds like AoeO for me in quests/objectives, without that hints and scouts section.

There is even more that I usually remember while playing AoeO but my post was to show how a “outsider” has much more in common than Aoe 2 and 3 with the 4th game… Unfortunately, only the first two (homing arrows and same colors for allies, players and enemies) bother for both games but in every other aspect, Aoe4 is heavier in files size but pales in humor and heroes.

Great observations! I don’t at all equate AoEO’s hotkeys to AoE4’s, but I understand that you are generally lumping them together in your own mind, which makes sense for you to do that. I would be thrilled if AoE4 ever used AoEO’s hotkey system myself.

Thanks for the reply – helps a lot!

I don’t play Aoe4 anymore… Did people create a mod to change UI icons (like they promised?).

I wonder how interesting could even be when some units on Aoe4 had different icons based on the civ’s attributes (the unique Man-at-Arms… In AoeO we get different skins for spearman and champion upgrade differences for them). In the age of minimalism, even the closed camera of the last game makes you wonder how much they focused their eyes on what was close but they still can’t see (and grive proper details).

Aoe 4 has some weird design. Not bad, not good but awkward.

I would put in another month like mid-late August when most return from vacations and before school starts.

Even so a playerbase around 5k is not that bad considering it’s only steam data.

  • There are games who survived with less.

But the real test is the DLC. The timing for it is what matters. Because alot of games will launch in september-december period, after the summer draught.

any rts has too many hotkeys. actually the lack of it is bad for any rts. specially for pro scene

Actually no, rushing a DLC (hopefully is an expansion pack an not DLC) is the worst thing they can do, they need to do s lot of changes: game play, graphics, add physics, animations, UI etc so a simple DLC won’t work.
