I love the CONCEPT of flemish revolution. Suddenly turning the tide and forcing the enemy to the defensive?
The problem is that, especially at lower ELOs, that tide turn can very quickly just overwhelm someone and win the game, and that’s not very much fun.
The way to fix that is to make it more skill based. So here’s an idea; what if Flemish Revolution wasn’t a permanent change? What if it gave you, say, five minutes? All the changed villagers would get a timer on them, and after 5 minutes had passed, if they were still alive, they’d be turned back into villagers.
That way, they’d need to take advantage of the wave of troops to do as much damage ASAP, and if they didn’t, they would go away. And the defender just needs to stay alive for a certain timeframe, and they’ll be able to push back again.
When used offensively yes its an issue but lets say you are getting attacked and you use this as a panic button. Then half way you are dealing with the enemy and your villagers become normal, what to do then?
By then, hopefully you will have pushed them far enough away that you have had a chance to rebuild a little bit of your normal military, and you can return your villagers to your economy.
The great thing is, with this time pressure added, you could actually buff the Flemish militia if necessary. Right now, you get them forever, so if you make them too strong, it’s pretty hard to screw up. But if you only have them for a limited time, then if you don’t use them right, they become much weaker no matter how good their stats are.
The entire technology becomes much more skill based, which makes it feel more fair on the other players behalf, and personally, more fun on mine.
I was thinking more along the lines of the white ‘charge-up attack’ bar above them, slowly decreasing.
Another neat bit would be it would really encourage their use for defense rather than offense, since you’d lose some time getting them to the enemy unless you did a more risky unboosted villager rush.
I wouldn’t want to lose the time pressure; needing to take the MOST advantage of a bonus AS FAST AS POSSIBLE is great for a game that tends towards being slower and more strategic on the whole.
I’d be fine with allowing it to be researched multiples times, though. Though it should probably increase in cost each time. It’d be neat to see multiple revolutions over a game.
This is kinda interesting and I like the idea of it from a thematic point of view as well. A revolutionary army doesn’t always stay around like a professional military and is much more likely to fizzle out in drawn outconflict with a powerful adversary so this could kinda get reflected in game by having a time limit on how long you have access to the Flemmish militia after they “revolt”.
