Ares was an old man in the original art.
Don’t get stroppy saying you hate Microsoft because they’re sticking to their old interpretation and not choosing to Hollywood-ise everything. If you don’t like the game there’s plenty of other portrayals of Ares out there for you to play

exactly for this reason we have the option to stick to the old portrait at release.
some few other gods got slightly changed (sometimes in age) too. so whats the problem in giving more freedom to chose? - but you’re right maybe mods will fix this if retold doesn’t.
also i like the armor and pose not talking about those things personally,

Ares was not an experienced imposing general. He was a reckless, unchecked warlord spoiling for fights and usually ending up getting trashed.

Ares was honoured greatly in Sparta as a god of war and bravery.
Ares was believed to grant the Spartans courage, strength, and victory in their military campaigns, not at all as pop culture usually depictes him.

Aye but peoples views of the Spartans have also been warped and misinformed by pop culture (in general terms).
Athena was patron god of Sparta, and Aphrodite, Apollo and Artemis all had larger cult followings and more temples in Sparta than Ares

Sure, but it is said there was even an archaic Spartan statue of Ares in chains in the temple of Enyalios, in the centre of Sparta, and several other temples too.
The cult of Ares was still widely prominent among Spartans, although probably Athena and other deities’ cults were more prominent, yes.

Exactly. The Spartans worshipped Athena, Zeus, Apollo and the like much more than Ares who was not a god most Greeks would go seek out.
The Spartans were militaristic but not warmongers. They were very restrained initially at least. The Romans on the other hand venerated Mars very much more and saw themselves as his descendants. But Mars was not identical to Ares. And Ares was never depicted as a old bearded man who looks older than Zeus…

Even if the new ares art concept is right (Not saying it is. It’s not), the portrait still looks weird. Like the body was drawn in a cartoony-style, but the face looks like a copied/pasted AI face; then the helmet has an entire different style compared to the body and the face (and even worse: it looks placed way too high and unnatural, like it’s hanging only from the forehead. Unlike the original where it’s clear the helmet slides to the back of the head).
I just hope all the portraits get replaced with human-made ones. Because all of them have something weird like the example described above. The only ones that look somewhat ok are Skadi’s and Hera’s.
Or at least, I hope we can mod UI portraits like in aoe2 and aoe3, so we can replace these portraits with something we like.
