Aoe3 period was perfect.
For gameplay reasons (gunpowdwer units, archers, archaic units like crossbows and pikemen, heavy cavalry, falconets and warships with gunpowder use, …) and it was super exciting on its own, because not many games represent that period.
There is so much untapped potential with the ancient era of history. With Age of Empires: DE and Age of Empires II: DE Return of Rome I hoped for a complete modern Age of Empires experience but both fell short in one way or another. I would absolutely play an Age of Empires IV in the ancient era. I am hopeful that someday World’s Edge will take the risk and make something other than a remake or a new Age of Empires in medieval times.
Antiquity is a lot bigger timeframe than the middle ages. I think antiquity could be split in 2 parts
1st part could cover the era from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age collapse ~10,000 BC to ~1200
Ages Could be Stone Age, Copper Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age
2nd part Classical Antiquity from the Archaic period to Late Antiquity ~1200 BC to ~600 AD
Ages could be Archaic/Dark Age, Classical Age, Golden Age, Imperial Age
Or a game could have more than 4 ages ~10,000 BC to ~600 AD
Rly? Nobody? Stone age plz!
Seriously, the neolithic period is deeply under appreciated.
Would love to go from simple forages with stones and clubs to see it progress slowly into a civilization of antiquity.
Age I - Neolithic period aka Stone Age.
Age II - Transition period between Stone Age and Bronze Age.
Age III - Bronze Age
Age IV - Late Bronze age / early iron age.
or just short:
“Dark” Age - Stone Age - Bronze Age - Iron Age
I would vote for a remaster and rebalance of AoE 1 as a stand in for AoE 5.
A less Eurocentric western culture focused game would be nice. a few places that could be focused on are Mesoamerica, East Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa.
