I’m crossing my fingers for something big in 2021. They might or might not have hinted at something like this in their Battle Royale video.
It’s hopeful thinking but who knows

I think 100 would be the best number.
I’ve already made 41, so only 24 left.
Different architecture to each region, different unit skins to each region, black villagers. 100 campaign, 100 history. And different campaigns: Deathmatch mode, similar to Pritviraj vs Ghurids, full water, etc.
(20 characters)
There were easily 100 civilizations in the medieval age.
Let’s get to 50 first!
more is always better for Age of Empires 2, as has been proven time and time again.
Exactly, 4-5 civs every year. We need to reach 50 first.
Spice DLC: Tamils, Bengalis, Sinhalese, Afghans, Swahili - the most important Indians + Afghans + Swahili
American DLC: Mississippians, Iroquois, Muisca, Mapuche, Tarascans - the most important South and North Americans
African DLC: Kongolese, Zimbabweans, Somalians, Nubians, Songhai - the most important Africans
A second Indian DLC for later: Kannads, Nepalese, Deccans, Orissa
Spice DLC: No new architecture sets. Testing how well new civs perform in DE.
American DLC: New Native American Architecture Set separated from Yucatan Buildings.
African DLC: New East African Architecture separated from West African Malian.
Second Indian DLC: New Dravidian Architecture separated from North Indo-Aryan.
I think 50 is a more reasoneable number, and after that it will get very hard to design any civ that is not just a copy.
It is also a round number, which is always favourable.
We need more civilizations
I would like to see a new civilization too. But is there a reason for another one ? I think game ( without mods ) is already kept fresh with new balance changes, QoL improvements and new scenarios.
I believe “playability and fun” is more important than “more and more unneeded content”.
I’d say 40 civs are enough. Maybe they could add one civ per year to keep it fresh. I think there are still plenty other things that could be added to the game like campaigns, historical battles and coop campaigns for example.
The first Spice DLC should bring a New Architecture for Swahili, the South African architecture. Kongolese and Zimbabweans(Uganda) could use it later. Or just give Swahili the current architecture and it would change later.
I propose a second Forgotten: Siamese, Tibetans, Kanembu, Georgians.
Even the East Asian Set needs some breaking. The Japanese looking design is currently being used for five civs. Also this new Asian set can be used to include the Tibetans within the first DLC. While only Japanese and Koreans will retain the old Far East Asian set, others can use the new look.
You are probably new to AoE2 who joined after DE. For us old players we always want more new civs and maps to join the already large roaster of AoE2 since we have been playing it since years. AoE2 is already close to being the perfect game. A few more civs and we cover everyone.
Exactly. A Chinese architecture is much needed, similar to Incas and of course a Nomad architecture.
Even Two: the South American and the North American.
I think there is 0 reasons to not add more civilizations or dev team have to support the modding system. I’m sure New Civilizations/Architecture Sets/Units skins would be very popular.
40 is too little, 50 is more what I woul go for. We are only 15 civs away from 50 anyway, while just another 5 new civs, though great, would just really leave people asking for more.
Exactly. 40 as a number is very similar to 35. 50 is a perfect number for sure.
Personally I’m fine as is either way but I think anything more then 50 is excessive
It will not only be appealing to the Multiplayer community but also the Single Player community. New Civs, new maps add something permanent to the game with endless replayability.
I doubt this battle royal mode can be played with AI. It is more appealing to people who like playing with friends(multiplayer), but what about the other side of the coin?. Single Player section doesn’t really gain anything big from this update . There is a huge fanbase of AoE2 that likes playing it solo enjoying every bit of game rather than just the competitive scene.
Other RTS: My game has 4 factions, duking it out on 20 maps, with 100 pop limit!
AoE2: Still in early Beta?
Yeah, but there are lots of ppl of the multiplayer community (including me) want mod support. I want to play Non-Data architecture mods.
