https://youtu.be/j9zr1Liwo5U?si=1q19KLoIevzCXxAy watch please. And yes I totally agree with you but please watch the video. You can see royal guard of Sparta just higher level of Hoplite. And no hippeus must same Athena get Cavalry second upgrade. But I still must ask bonus damage to horse unit can not different. It about history and balance
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/GXceZnhPKZ0 an another video, I love his voice and way he created video, but this video have way to talk same thing hippius after pelep war they become cavalry. really I want to see Sparta in AOE 1 and easy more for everything. Although I will bet if 1 Spartan met 1 viking or samurai, hoplite alway winner .
Hoplite in real life get destroyed by cavalry hitting from flank or behind many times, so I don’t see why that just Hoplite use spear that it need to have anti cavalry.
By the way, Tech tree of Sparton in AOE2 I see is strong infantry & Siege while weak on archer & cavalry.
Is this correct? I don’t heard much of Sparton using siege engine on field
No one really used Siege Engines on the field before cannons.
That is a video game thing. They are called Siege Engines for a reason, they are just for sieges.
They were way to bulky and inefficient to be used on the field in real life.
Also the Spartans are missing Heavy Scorpion so it’s not even that good. Practically just Onager.
Scorpion is a lot better now with Ballistics.
The Greek city-states weren’t known for having good cavalry, except for Tarentum and Thessaly (but the latter isn’t a city-state). But even then, Greek cavalry wasn’t even heavy, not until Alexander’s time. It makes sense for the Spartans to have bad cavalry.
That video is about a mod for Rome 2 Total War, it’s talking about unit balance in that game, not history.
I haven’t found anything about that, but even if they did become cavalry, depicting them as infantry still isn’t wrong, since at one point they were infantry.
Sometime and a lot broken by the way from flank and back. Do not only cavalry many time with is Infantry( include hoplite Macedonia get the same weakness, and spear , legionary form too not different ).
The same with information I found, it told about royal guard but after peleploi war they are cavalry, and Athena get second upgrade cavalry so why Sparta don’t. And scorpion and cross bow too. Archer why Athena get full update???
I don’t think there’s really any history behind this, I think the devs just wanted to make the Athenian and Spartan civs different from each other. In reality, their armies would have been very similar during the Greco-Persian and Peloponnesian Wars.
It looks to me like, between the three civs, the devs wanted to have one cavalry civ (Achaemenids), one infantry civ (Spartans) and one archer civ (Athenians). I know Athenians are labelled “Infantry and Naval Civilisation”, but with a lumberjack bonus and fully-upgraded arbalesters (i.e. recurve bowmen) and skirmishers that can both be buffed by unique techs and the Strategos’ aura, playing them as an archer civ looks like their best option to me.
This comment amused me. My money’s on the samurai, personally. He’d be much more likely to have dueling experience and a broader skill set, and have superior arms and armour. Hoplites’ strength came in large part from fighting in formation, so a lone hoplite isn’t all that intimidating.
