Which civs could have a new architecture without a DLC release?

Without being tied with a DLC but with a skin patch

Vikings: Scandinavian architecture

Turks: Anatolian architecture

Persians: Central Asia architecture

Mongols, Khitans: Nomadic architecture

Chinese, Jurchen, Korean, Vietnamese, 3K: Mainland Asia architecture, because the current one looks more Japanese than chinese

Tupi: Tropical American architecture, similar to the caribbean people like Taino and Kalinagos.

You missed the huns.Id add cumans but then tatars will be the only one unless persians gets the same set.

I would be strongly opposed to any civs having unique architecture. The Japanese, Koreans, and Mongols should share the current set.

Not unique, but some could share it with future civs.

Scandinavian: Vikings, Finns, Sweden

Tropical America: Tupi, Carib, Taino

I think you could separate the current “Mediterranean” architecture set into three:

  • West Mediterranean: Spanish, Portuguese, Romans, Sicilians and Italians
  • Anatolian: Byzantines and Turks
  • Caucasian: Armenians and Georgians

A lot of South and South-East Asian civs. And if some civs get split like Malians, Slavs and Saracens.

Byzantines Bulgarians Armenians Georgians should get moved to a different set.Maybe romans should get this too.

Any civi using the nomad monastery should also get a nomadic set.

The Mongol empire spanned many large cities of Asia. I think its appropriate for mongols to have current architecture.

Edit. a little more context, Kublai Khan’s court was based at Dadu, also known as Khanbaliq (Cambaluc in older European sources), which is modern-day Beijing, China.

Koreans yes, but Mongols didn’t really built in a similar way to the Japanese.

Ideally Mongols would share a set with Tibetans and Tanguts, but if those two don’t get added, a Chinese set could work.

I dont think those would be the three I would choose

Personally, I would go for Eastern Med and Black Sea togheter and then maybe a new Late antiquity set for Goths, Romans and maybe Huns

There could be a different Mill model at least. Those windmills only appeared centuries after the fall of (Western) Rome.
(There is also the anachronistic Mesoamerican windmill, but at least windmills were already a thing in the world, they were not in late antiquity.)

I personally reaply dislike seeing Late Romans with renaissance archotecture in general

Admitedly the civ design is confused and pulling a lot from the principate for some reason, but at least aesthetically the UUs and castle look fitting

Romans could have the same architecture from AoE1 client IMO

That doesnt work either for a few reasons

To begin with, Roman architecture was really diferent after the third century crisis, and also the buildings would need to be remodelled to look more AoE2-ish

Would you replace the architecture set as a whole (not counting Castle, Wonder, Monastery), or keep certain buildings? For example, the Watch Tower looks Ancient Roman.

Why? Especially in the case of Mongols.

The current East Asian architecture is extremely Japanese and doesn’t fit other civs I don’t think.

Chronicles greek buildings are a better fit.

Currently these are the two main ones, Sinitic and Nomad, that have enough existing civs that they could reasonably get a new architecture without a DLC package. But realistically I don’t think MS is going to do any architecture set they don’t get paid for, so DLCs are really the only bet to get new architectures.

Eh i’d personally be ok with the current E. Asia set only being Japanese. I could live with Koreans keeping it but I very much would rather see Mongols get a new nomadic set; the Japan-centric current E. Asian set is horrible for Mongols tbh.

100% this. Though i’d probably rather see a “barbarian” set focused on Goths and Huns (or maybe giving both (or just Huns) the nomadic set) and leaving Romans with Med. but a more Roman set for the Romans (and maaaybe Byz, though i’d rather see an Anatolian set for them) would be cool.

It wouldn’t be out of place to give the Goths the (West) Mediterranean architecture set, since the game focuses on the Medieval Era and the Goths ruled Spain and Italy during the early Medieval era and adopted the culture and language of their Mediterranean subjects in the process. Even the Spanish kings of today claim to be descendants of the Visigothic kings of Hispania.

Romans and Goths (also Vandals if they are added) should have a roman style : looks degraded in feudal age, restored in castle and imperial, to portray late roman architecture.

This way it looks different from other mediterranean civs, who end up with a renaissance style.

Byzantines, Bulgarians, Armenians & Georgians : Byzantine style

Huns and Cumans : western steppes architecture. Looks more european-influenced than the eastern steppes architecture of Mongols and Khitan.

3K civs : ancient Chinese

Chinese Koreans Vietnamese & Jurchens : medieval Chinese

(current east asian thus remains for the Japanese only as the style is blatantly japanese)
