they’re the last archer techs to be given for free in a civ bonus. ballistics and fletching-line. what do you think? which future civs will get them?
Free bodkin and bracer/ ballistics will be not as powerful as free fletching imo. Free fletching should not be free. I think free bodkin and bracer and ballistic can be for civs with 0 eco bonus in both land and water maps.
maybe if it is the ONLY bonus that civs gets. it’s doable.
Free fletching= skipping/delaying blacksmith in feudal. This makes the civ tower rush oppressive and archer rush super strong. This will be also OP in water maps.
I had an idea for an Andalusians civ that gets free Ballistics, but only after building a University. Thus, you still have to invest into it and don’t get an immediate power spike in Castle Age.
keep in mind that i proposed that it’s the only bonus. i didnt capitalize that word for nothing. without resource gathering bonuses, free fletching is worthless because there wouldn’t be enough archers or towers. also the bonus could require the blacksmith so no delaying.

Civs can go aggressive without eco bonus… Magyars atk bonus is worthless as it has no eco bonus?
the thing is that magyars have cheaper scouts. granted, its not an economic bonus, rather a military one. but it’s a bonus. the civ with free fletching i’m proposing wouldn’t even have that. maybe their archery ranges could have extra line of sight as a team bonus
Yes, but archers are still ‘cheaper’ in feudal age and pose less burden on eco as they do not cost food. Besides, I don’t think future DLC will introduce a civ with only 1 civ bonus.
archers are the most gold-expensive unit in feudal; they’re far from cheap. the villagers you need to put on gold for constant archer production are the villagers you’re not putting on food.
in a couple of years, when they run out of ideas, it might happen
Gold is less important than food in feudal age and scout rush compete the food you need for villager production and aging up to Castle age.
if your scouts are cheaper AND they have free +1 attack you might be more willing to compete the resource for villagers… if your archers have +1 attack and range but there’s no other bonus whatsoever that will help you it can’t get overpowered
Unless the civ does not have access to spear-line, it can end the game in feudal age abnormally frequently in open land maps with towers/archers.
Now I know why the original devs restricted the Briton range bonus to Castle Age onwards.

Free ranged attack upgrades would be somewhat OP. Maybe you could weaken it a little by requiring a blacksmith anyways (meaning you still have to invest the 150 wood to get a blacksmith). It would make archer play stronger, tower rushes stronger, improve castle drops (and castle usage in general), buff galley play. These techs are often worthwhile even when you’re going for cavalry/infantry because of how they improve buildings. Which means that other bonuses would need to be somewhat weakened.
Free ballistics is more complicated. It doesn’t actually improve damage output for ranged units. Buildings are more likely to hit with ballistics (as cavalry and other fast moving units won’t be able to casually run by), but dodging is still possible. It’s a bonus that is more dependent on your opponent’s skill than on your own. Probably would want to require at least castle age before it comes in. It would however, make it easier for an opponent to know when ballistics came in (as that changes how dodging projectiles works).
None. Those upgrades are way too powerful and no civ will get it for free. Maximum bonus if any will be something like -50% wood or no gold cost on ballistics. Fletching already has all types of bonuses covered I think.

anyway, yes, it’s all to overpowered. so let’s go crazy! why don’t they make a civ with BOTH bonuses? to balance it they should do something equally crazy like halving buildings HP. negative bonuses are an interesting concept that has never been implemented in this game. i mean, yes, goths have no walls because they have mad infantry; chinese start with less food because they start with more villagers… but if free fletching is ever given as a civ bonus, none of that is enough. come on devs, brainstorm already!!!
