Why aren’t there 1 population and 2 population cavalry unit mercenaries?

Cavalry unit mercenaries take up a lot of space. In the past, there was still no 1 population cavalry unit mercenary. There were at least 2 population cavalry unit mercenaries, but that is gone now. Currently the cavalry unit mercenaries are at least 3 populations. This makes the cavalry unit useless, no matter how strong it is. Overpopulation means taking up more space. It means fewer soldiers. No good player would prefer a small population over a large population. Therefore, the existing or newly added cavalry unit, mercenaries, should be set to 1 population and 2 populations. Thus, the cavalry unit mercenaries can become more useful.

The Zenata Rider used to be 2 pop and it was OP as hell. Most mercs are not supposed to be pop efficient, it’s part of their price, but even then heavy cav mercs are often still worth their price in gold and pop as they are super tanky and/dish out huge amounts of damage.

But arent all mercs (except canoniers) more pop heavy than the original unit?

Besides that, mamluks, bosniacs and stradiots are great and their stats reflect the additional pop cost

making mercs upgradeable, trainable and spammable was a brainrot-inducing mistake

It’s so stupid.

Having Mercs is supposed to be a privilege and uncommon. They’re supposed to be baddass versions of your ‘normal’ troops, but with the cost and pop hindering them from being the mainstay of your army. Later on, they should also be outclassed by your standard units once they are fully upgraded.

I half-jokingly say that making mercenaries imperial/spammed was another way to nerf the civs that can’t access them (its a short list) and those particular civs seem to get their lategame performance nerfed in perpetuity

Nah. That would require too much foresight and in depth understanding of the game.

There arent 1 pop cavalry mercs but there are 1 pop outlaw cavalry. But you need 1 card to make them 1 pop.

Well, here’s a shameless and happy dutch player.

The gold heavy eco and pop space saved via banks goes so nicely with infinite royal horsemen and highlander swarms.

I’m old enough to remember when dutch had no musketeers and their heavy cavalry was garbage, which made halbs actually relevant and forced players to make a composition to adapt to limitations

Actually good players would prefer small pop cause they can micro better so it makes a difference. They can out micro their opponent.

My favorite right now with dutch DE is the Red Lancer-Akan Ankobia… For trolling. It works quite well.
