The unit is overall strong vs all melee because of high attack, It only lacks a bit in pierce armor and receives bonus dmg for being a shock infantry. It performs good vs knights.
check from 6 minute onward.
Because it’s a heavy, pike-type unit…
Because of its performance based on its own statistics?
I mean, Rattan Archers are defined as a strong anti-archer unit because of its pierce armor, not because it has attack bonus vs archers.
interesting. i wouldn’t have though it defeats knights. it’s interesting to note that vikings are the only civ that don’t have a bonus specific for them. however, they have wheelbarrow, which is a massive push to reach castle age, the age when you’re able to create the varangian guards
Probably due to the high attack ? They have the damage type cavalry in their stats but probably were tweaked during the design to avoid them becoming too op.
They have the cavalry damage type so Chieftains can boost it
Yeah that’s generally why a unit got a 0 damage type, it’s because something will boost them. But then it’s not right to give the entire unit that info, except if it’s an all-civ tech.
finally i understand why, in the techtree site, units have mysterious things like “0 (camel)” in the attack stat.
agree. it creates confusion. there’s no point in portraying the militia-line of ALL civs with “0 (mounted units)” in the attack stat as if all of them can gain an anti-cavalry bonus.
Vikings have +20%HP and after UT have bonus attack bonus vs cavalry and camel.
The Viking HP bonus is a pretty good bonus for a unit that generates gold as it fights. Surviving longer means more gold generated (in addition to being more likely to win the fight). And that’s in addition to chieftens. And then free wheelbarrow and hand cart are both useful techs if you want to produce VGs, as they have a notable food cost. The Viking economy is often considered the best eco bonus in the game.
