Why HC deal so much damage to siege (except rams)

It’s ridiculous how easy it is for 2 or 3 HC to destroy a mangonneau or a scorpion.

What if they HC would made slightly less damage to mango and scorpions and slightly more to rams ?

It would break the balance ?

That’s what high pierce attack does. And they are already punished very hard by an onager shot.

Yeah I know. That’s why Im asking if it would break the balance. Now with 3 HC you have much more chance to kill a mango than the mango kills your HC. If you are not too bad with micro you gonna loose 1 HC so it’s very cost effective. I think it should remain same vs onagers but HC should deal a bit less damage against mangonneau.

Though the mangonel is a CA unit. If you upgrade it to an onager which should come at a similar time to your opponent getting chemistry, the onager outranges the hand cannon for nearly all civs (insert some rant about the janissary) so it will fire first. Siege engineers double it down.

The only civs who break the mold are Bohemians (HC in castle age) and Turks (free chemistry) who can challenge it early, and Hindustani (+2 range after UT) who match or outrange the onager.

Yes but except in some rare situation, it’s hard to get onager at early imperial because the tech is very expansive VS Chemistry much cheaper and less niche. It’s not rare to use Mangonneau at imperial.
And yes onager a more than fine vs HC. My problem is more about a small quantity of HC at early imperial that 5 villagers cannot our repair a mangonneau vs 3 HC is tuff.

Not a massive issue. That means just a short window when HCs will threaten mangonels, so you’d build some HCs from scratch just to capitalise on that small window before mangonels are upgraded to onagers, instead of using other options vs mangonels such as the light cavalry that is already built up.

It’s a card that can only be played once per match, if the opponent doesn’t expect it.

Most civs have onagers and chemistry research time is long. So this should be fine for most cases.

Yes but it’s not about the time. It’s about the price. It’s easy to instant click chemistry at early imperial.
800 food 500 gold is a massive expanse that is very hard to afford at early imperial. Add 500 food and 600 wood if you want to +1 range.

VS only 300 food 200 gold for Chemistry.

I think my suggestion would not be a nerf for powder canon units that suffer to killed rams that take a their castle.

If you rely a lot on mangonels then you will put the onager upgrade quite high on the list, especially if you really need the extra range. Just like the cavalier upgrade and 3rd blacksmith will be aimed for quickly if you rely on knights.
