Immortal Pillars will be make or break for AoMR, it will decide if the developers can make entirely new pantheons and campaigns and it will also be very important for the Asian market.
They have to prove that they can deliver something much better than Tale of the Dragon.
It does What are they addind to it? I abandoned the game long time ago when they did not added any new campaign to the game. (and the game and main campaign were fucking broken and bugged)
In AoE III DE you have Historical Battles which are now all co-op playable (with different decks from solo version) which they originally werenât. Historical maps with special win conditions as well as some new buildings and techs to go with some restrictions not on normal maps. Also some new cards for civilizations and revolutions.
Age of Mythology is a nostalgic game as opposed to Age of Empires 4 which is a RTS version of League of Legends. Age of Mythology players play for the story and the âmagicalâ aspect to the gameplay, not the leaderboards of multiplayer and have always trended towards AI Skirmish over PVP Skirmish.
My wife and I played until 2-3 updates ago when they changed the Titan tier difficulty to be more akin to Extreme and less of a middle ground between Hard and Extreme. We would play 1-2 games daily after work and enjoy them tremendously. Then all of a sudden the Titan difficulty aiâs started sending armies as soon as they could be built back to back while we couldnât even build up an economy to recover from the first attack.
So between defensive structures being absolutely worthless and the harsh changes to AI with no patch notes denoting changes. Itâs no wonder players are abandoning it now that theyâve gotten their nostalgia scratched. Age of Empires 4 is a much better PVP game after all with it having staged tiers of Economy, Offense, AND Defense in Early, Mid, AND Late game compared to Mythologyâs unbalanced but quirky and enjoyable ages with powers and monsters.
Its multi layered- First as everybody has already noticed, the gameplay modes are hitting their limits- the campaigns are done and all thatâs left are PVP and skirmish, which is rather barebones for an age game. Weâve heard murmurs of a roadmap, but nothing substantial.
Next is the common complaint that Rushes are too dominant since defenses are too weak. This could be adjusted, but I think the balance team is against this until at least Immortal Pillars comes out since something that big might cause ripple effects for that productâs balance, and furthermore take away from its hype.
Another thing AOM lacks is things like rewards for progress/logging in for the day- All of the profile pics are already unlocked from the start, and there are no skins or unique major god statues available to unlock.
Finally, there have been no events nor announcements of plans for events to temporarily juice up numbers. to get the aformentioned skins or Profile pics or unique god statues.
You can spend months playing Singleplayer contents but AOM? Itâs still just old campaigns with 1 new civ god only and its promotional scenario and nothing more. Thatâs not going to keep the game forever. You need to make the player busy with something. Not everyone is multiplayer pros. AOMR shouldâve introduced some more singleplayer contents. Maybe Chinese DLC can give some rise again. But still not enough. Itâll take years to get even close to the level of AOE2. The way I see it, lack of contents to play is the reason why AOE3DE, AOE4 didnât managed to become the next big thing.
I never thought The New Atlantis was a small campaign? Itâs 12 missions for 1 civ. When you consider Fall of the Trident is 32 missions for 3 civs, thatâs a higher amount of campaign content relative to the amount of skirmish/multiplayer content.
AoE4 added one new campaign in its expansion, as well as 2 additional Art of War missions in its anniversary update.
The Sultans Ascend campaign unfortunately was a much lower production value than the release campaigns, lacking the IRL videos providing greater historical context.
No You did not noticed how rushed the story is In Fall of the Trident you spend 32 missions trying to prevent Kronos from escape while in The New Atlantis in 12 missions not only the villains release a bunch of Titans but the gate is opened, Kronos is released and its locked again in the same mission.
Also, you only play 9 missions as Atlanteans, just like the originals that you have 9 missions for each phanteons (with Greeks inflated to 14). You really think this is enough to tell a story
The good amount of missions to tell a good continuous story in a RTS is 20~24 missions (the same as Warcraft 3 The Frozen Throne), with the minimum to not feel rushed is 15~16 (the amount we usually get in AoE2 DLC).
A good example is Command and conquer 3 tiberium wars vs Red Alert 3, with the later having a super rushed campaign.
I think these IRL videos they did maybe was a mistake. It problably costed a huge amount of money to produce a low amount of missions while they could produce a ton of campaigns like AoE2 have with a simpler method.
Youâre exaggerating a lot on this topic, the game, even in its current version without any DLC, is still a lot more fun and pleasant to play than AOE 2, 3 or 4. Itâs probably the only game in the Age Of Empire series where Iâm not getting bored yet. The different civilisation gameplays are original enough to make each game unique, and without being a pro you can really enjoy yourself whether youâre playing 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 or 4v4 even against IA. On top of that there are the campaigns that I havenât even started yet and that Iâm going to play in co-op with my sister via the mod. I didnât think an Age of Empires game would last me long, but I think Iâll be playing it for a long time to come, especially with all the DLC thatâs coming out.
I agree with you. I canât understand why somebody would choose AoE 4 or AoE 2 or even AoE 3 over Retold. It will never make much sense to me other than nostalgia or sunk cost.
Yes, it is not a good time to be an AoE 3 and 4 player⊠I directly alternate between AoE 2, AoM and AoEOâŠ
Yes, you have the historical maps that give you a certain replayabilityâŠ
Yes, thatâs trueâŠmaking DLC ââfor those games takes time and that hurts them in the long run since players ask for content all the timeâŠfor some reason these games are not good to be games as a serviceâŠ
Yes, thatâs why I say that they should have done two more campaigns for The Sultans Ascends: one for the Ottomans to fight the Byzantines from Mazikert until the death of Suleiman the Magnificent (1071-1566) and another for the Japanese from Kurikara until the Siege of Osaka (1183-1615)âŠ
Yes, Retold also has something that makes it unique, which is its mythology⊠AoM is on my podium along with AoE 3 and AoEO (since all three use the same engine and use similar mechanics)⊠then on another podium I put AoE 2, AoE 4 and AoE 1 (because it is a more classic RTS)âŠ
Most people were there for the campaign.
Multiplayer balance is in a terrible state ATM, so most people donât even bother.
It is natural for games to fall off popularity after release.
Most of the people playing AoE3 will also play AoM, because they are similar games in terms of mechanics.
Notice the Aoe2 DLC with ancient greek? thatâs a way to get Aoe2 players onto AOM.
Eventually the game will stabilize to around the same player count as AOE3.
