I just hope they fix a few outstanding bugs and release all past event rewards before they move on. That’s not a big demand.
What happened it lost players again so fast? how can interest lose so quickly
I think what he meant is that they dropped support. They didn’t just cancel or delay a DLC. They (according to second hand information, I don’t follow AoE3 news) said that they’re not going to do further patches, updates or DLC for AoE3. It’s still up there, can be bought and played and the servers will stay up as long as possible, but the devs are no longer working on it.
What you have now is the exact same game you’ll have in 10 years.
This sounds really sad how you put it. But doesn’t this happen to all games sooner or later? And who knows maybe they come back but who knows where their intern priorities and real reasons are.
I also appreciate what they did
What I do not appreciate is betrayal, lying, mocking, denial, ignoring, and nor even doing anything for quite a lot of time
Really dude…? Thats the hill you will die on? Pretending you don’t understand what people are saying…?
You said like it was only a DLC cancelled, like a minor setback, but the game support is over, its a different thing.
Black Mesa.
Warcraft 3 Remastered was cancelled too. Oh yeah, it’s on my battle net, its not cancelled lol ( the campaign is literally broken and crash to desktop)
Why you are so defensive for this…? Insulting the developers…? lol
The game development and support was cancelled, literally DLC and updates planned got cancelled. We are discussing this kind of thing here because people fear Mythology could be cancelled too. Dunno you are you got so balistic.
Cancelled is the totally wrong word for it.
The correct word would be “abandoned” perfectly describes the state of the game.
How many DLC did Black Mesa get?
Also bad example because it’s a fan made game that was in development hell for over a decade.
It was neither cancelled nor abandoned. It just got released in a very broken state.
Much worse then AoE3DE.
Not a remaster. It’s a whole standalone re-implementation in a new engine compared to the original (by a volunteer / fan team that was at least originally completely unaffiliated with Valve).
Quake would be a better example
Remake. But AoE2DE and AoE3DE are also pretty much remakes with every asset being replaced and the engines massively overhauled.
Technically there was a Half Life Source so it’s technically not even a new engine.
Quake got DLC after a remaster?
It’s been getting new games and remasters from time to time but I don’t think any of the games got remastered and then got new DLC, right?
You wouldn’t count AoE4 and it’s DLC as AoE3DE content, right?
Yes, Dimension of the machine
They gotta fix the multiplayer lobbys searching. People should have to type title for their lobbies. It is sad that Retold is so much worse than previous releases of AoM in this.
The DE games are done officially, despite the team not being the original Ensemble team. There’s a vast difference between that and an unofficial (albeit sanctioned) project. And it’s definitely different from HL: Source, which was developed in-house. Imagine the Source knowledge at their fingertips, vs. Black Mesa’s (as talent as the Black Mesa team is, speaking as someone who owned Black Mesa!).
(and Valve still messed up the lighting in HL: Source, and failed to account for the impact of Source physics in Xen )
This is a bit of a tangent anyway. I agree that the DE versions got a lot of support, even if I agree with the general opinion that ending support for III: DE hurts.
Yes, it was both because it wasn’t profitable (a third of AoE 2 players and half of 4) and because it was an uncomfortable game (bad colonialism) for World Edge…
Yes, and it’s a shame… because it looked like after the Baltic DLC (Poland and Denmark) there was going to be a Middle Eastern DLC (Persia and Oman and native Georgian units for the Russians) (something like The Mountain Royals from AoE 2 but for AoE 3) due to some updates they had made to the Asian consulate and the Qizilbash native unit…
They played the Chinese campaign and moved on to other games… I did the same, I finished it in 1 day, I uninstalled it to try CoH 3 and now I installed CoH 2 because I still had challenge missions to complete… I’ll come back when they launch a new monthly event…
Yes, but it’s less noticeable now because they’re released as a game-as-a-service (and they give you content for 2 to 5 years)…
Yes, but it doesn’t surprise me since they’ve been doing it since 2020, only since 2023 it became increasingly evident (remember the patches they announced and never released, even the last patch was a datapatch that players had to install manually… everything was super crappy)… but hey, I guess “long live AoE 2 and middle finger for the rest of the saga”…
The Doom 1 and 2 remasters too… I remember them releasing mission packs that the original devs made in 1996 for the remasters and several that were mods from the 2000s-2010s for the 15 and 20th anniversary of Doom 1 and 2…
True… I would say that they are such good remasters that they seem like remakes, since they seem like new games but with the same essence…
Of course, the DE and Retold are already done… they only focus on releasing DLC every so often (for 2, as it is more popular and easier to produce, they release 2 DLC a year every 6 months, with AoE it is more in dribs and drabs)… I feel that they should not have canceled the Baltic DLC for AoE 3 but rather when they delayed it, they should have said that they were going to release it by the end of 2025 for the 20th anniversary with a Chronicles of Europe DLC for 3 DE made by CaptureAge (and that it would include campaigns for Suleiman, Gustavus Adophus and Napoleon) and that both DLCs would come in a 20th anniversary pack with the other DLCs from 3 DE… think about it, FE takes care of the civs of Poland and Denmark and the 15 multiplayer maps and CaptureAge of the Chronicles campaigns for 3 DE… it would be something like which was The Asian Dynasties which was made jointly by Ensemble Studios and Big Huge Games…and then the community wouldn’t be upset, but excited…
I loved Age of Mythology years ago when it was released and have played many hours on multiplayer on Retold so far.
Sometimes I have good streaks and enjoy it, and I enjoyed the Chinese gods when they were released (and there were many changes from the original version - as most people know the other gods Norse, Greek, etc. had very few changes from the original game, so the Chinese gods which did have a lot of updates from the old Chinese ones made the game feel modern which was good).
Recently though I have to say I have come across some seriously horrible people on multiplayer ranked. I’d unbiasedly say I am an above average player, and a good team player. I seem to end up with some really horrible teammates. The community is not great.
I have had teams where one guy moans at everyone, calls everyone noobs (and worse) and then quits - and I have gone on to win 2 vs 3 without our rude teammate anyway…
I just had a 2 v 2 where we were winning on points, and he got attacked and lost a few buildings and just quit…
I get teammates who are okay players but really bad team players and always blame me for everything… even if they are just not great.
I play ranked 1 v 1s sometimes and often win so I know I’m not bad, and often have a good score;
For a fairly ‘intelligent’ strategy game you do get a bunch of absolute ****-holes on this game, who really aren’t bright and lack team skills.
I like the game but I cannot find many good teammates to play with - the community is just **** currently in my opinion.
So you understood what was being said and pretended you did not on purpose just to play semantics…?
The DLC was CANCELLED and the future updates are CANCELLED. If you want to play semantics, an ‘abandoned’ game does not get an official report of the devs saying that development stopped, an abandoned game is just abandoned and no one know if they are being developed or not (like some eternal ‘early access’ games that dont receive updates for years and years and no one know what is happening).
But seriously, why you choose to waste time arguing this…?
None, its not their business model to release DLC.
And why bad example? The team making it remade the entire game, reworked the entire ending chapters and STILL release updates improving and fixing things. This game is a masterfull example of post release support.
Generally remake/remaster games does not need new content and don’t make sense to keep developing forever.
Of course it is abandoned, the campaign is still broken and no updates fixes it. 5 years is not enough to be considered abandoned to you? lol
By this definition, Starcraft 2 and Heroes of the Storm are not abandoned too.
Here we go again in the “remaster vs remake” debate… this does not matter in the point he was trying to make.
I know the ‘colonialism bad’ was enough to censor the content of the game and basically hide from all the events and pretend the game does not exist, but I did not considered it was inconvenient enough to cancel it…
Yes, I mean I prefer not to rub salt in the wound… they cancelled everything that has to do with the game (and they killed it for the future, in the present it will continue as it is now)… I already swore, I already cried, I already grieved and I simply turned the page and went to Retold… 2DE will still be there receiving DLC that I will play from time to time, the 4th game the same; even if AoEO/Project Celeste announces another civ for 2027 (Carthage) it will have more future than AoE 3DE… and I will stay between those 4 games, Retold being the one that takes the place of 3DE…
Yes, that’s why I said that wasn’t the only reason… I go for the profitable first and then the other things second… I can already see Relic considering going back to Antiquity for AoE 5 and for AoE 6 making an AoE 3 2.0 but only focused on Europe or simply setting it in the 20th century taking the assets from CoH 3/4 and giving it a WW1 touch up to the Cold War…
Can you explain why it doesn’t matter? I don’t understand.
Isn’t cancelling updates the definition of abandoning a game/application?
Like literally.
What else would you call abandoning a game?
Why? Can’t a game be officially be abandoned?
Can’t a developer/publisher announce a “last patch” or something like that?
Often they don’t, that is true, but just because they announced that they abandoned it doesn’t mean they didn’t abandon it.
Cancelling has a very different meaning then abandoning.
You wouldn’t say AoE3DE is still being supported because some people make mods for it, right?
Half-Life Source was abandoned by Valve which upset many people that wished for an Half-Life 1 with Half-Life 2 graphics so a group of fans started working on a fan project that took over a decade to finish.
I thought they updated WC3 reforged recently but maybe I remember that wrong. I never bought it myself.
As far as I know neither of the games are still getting updates.
Especially Heroes of the Storm seems to be dead. I haven’t hear of this game in many years.
This sounds like a wild conspiracy theory.
After supporting AoE3DE for many years they suddenly decided that colonialism is so bad now that they have to pretend the game never existed.
But it’s not like they are hiding AoE3DE. It’s not like Age of Empires Online where they pretend the game doesn’t exist.
This topic is getting out of hand, we’re talking more about Aoe3 than AOM here
