When looking at the stats it seems pretty similar to the Springald in DPS. But when using it in game it feels like it does no damage?
I tried out creating a mass of them the other day and they did grey, I thing only having a few might not be best. They are cheaper than springalds so use them similar to the roman fire ones where the more you have the better they are at wiping out everything
bed crossbow suffers an issue that its two springal shots have a spread, so many of the shots just miss the target, and we are yet to know if there are even more bugs with its second shot registry![]()
(if any dev see my post, please check and fix)
Yeah Corvinus says it is bugged or misdesigned so many shots does miss or not register.
It’s already been reported as a bug in the Bugs section. (Jin Bed Crossbow is still bugged - Shots does not register correctly)
Now, I don’t really know if it’s a bug or if it’s actually part of how it’s designed so that it only hits with a certain probability.
But anyway, a unique unit that fills the role of a normal unit being weaker than its normal version is bad balance, so even if it was intentional, they should try to correct it a bit, or fix this problem if it’s a bug.
With enough of them I guess I hadn’t noticed! All they arrows crisscross that I guess it worked?
Okay, I tested it the same way as Corvinus, but I discovered some new things:
STATS Comparison of Springalds vs. Beed Crossbow
-
Bed Crossbow:
– Atk: 8/10/13 (x2), Bonus: 4/4/5, Rof: 3.125
– Total: 12/14/18 (x12) -
Springald:
- Atk: 15 (x1), Bonus: +12, Rof: 3.125
- 27
The real problem isn’t so much the bug, but something else:
- “X2 attack but half damage, it’s not as effective as double damage”
In this game, damage resistance isn’t a percentage, but rather a subtraction:
- 1 Men-at-arm (III) 4/4 +0/2 armor (Blacksmith) vs. Beed Crossbow (III) For shoot: (6 - 14) x 2 = -16
- 1 Men-at-arms (III) 4/4 +0/2 armor (Blacksmith) vs Springald (III), for shoot: (6 - 27) x 1 = -21
The Springald will always deal +5 damage more than the Beed Crossbow in the Castle Age (III) in a single shot 100% of the time. The Beed Crossbow, in fact, even if it misses some of its shots, cannot defeat its counters if they get close enough.
Now, the Beed Crossbow receives +3 damage if you use the Castle Age Landmark in Imperial; we could test if that helps or not.
Castle Age (III) Comparison
10 Beed Crossbows (III) + 3 Meat-shields VS 20 Men-at-Arms with Blacksmith Upgrades (6/6 armor)
9 Springalds (III) + 3 Meat-shields VS 20 Men-at-Arms with Blacksmith Upgrades (6/6 armor)
Post-Imperial (IV) Comparison
15 Post-Imperial Springalds (PI) + 5 Melee Fighters VS 30 Post-Imperial Men-at-Arms Jin
16 Beed crossbows PI + 5 melee fighters VS 30 men-at-arms post-imperial Jin
If well protected, both Springalds and Beed crossbows can easily destroy melee infantry armies.
DISCUSSION
In theory, the Beed crossbow would be just as effective against Spearman, or even more so (25 wood cheaper), than the Springald, but less effective against Men-at-Arms than the Springald, at least in Feudal Age (II) and Castle Age. (III)
In the Imperial Age (IV), with the Bastion landmark, it is as effective as, or even more effective than, the Post-Imperial Springald against Post-Imperial infantry.
Awesome job in the research! Yes definitely a minor price decrease than springalds, and with unique tech it can get that +3 damage and move even faster but does lose out on the extra attack speed tech springalds get from other civs, right? There’s also other Jin advantages like a single production building for ranges and siege so that saves on wood, the aspect that same building can heal siege.
It misses many of it’s shots. Not as noticeable when shooting at big blobs of infantry. But they have to fix the shots not hitting. As seen here: Twitch
