A really fun concept would be a co-op/team mode wherein two players control the same Civ: one controlling all eco based units and buildings and the other controlling all military based units and buildings. It would require communication from the teammates but could allow for some really interesting gameplay. Imagine ranked teams like this.
It could also be appealing to newer players as one individual can focus on and learn macro eco wise while another focuses on micro military wise.
I think the idea could be fleshed out a lot more, but the more I think about how it could look, it could be really fun.

You could do this in aoe2: HD. Not sure if it’s possible in aoe2: DE. No specific restrictions on which aspect you could control—each player had theoretically full control over everything, with the most recent click being done—but you could just communicate with your teammate to do it by eco/military if you wanted.
Unfortunately this has never been built into AoM, so it’s probably unlikely to be implemented now.

I’ve never told anyone this before, but I discovered a way to play like this in the old AoM. All you had to do was start a regular 2v2 match and save the game. Then, re-enter the lobby and load the saved file — and here’s the trick I accidentally discovered:
Player 2 on Team 1 and Player 2 on Team 2 must rename themselves to match Player 1 on Team 1 and Player 1 on Team 2, respectively. For example:
MarakuJa
Arkantos
vs
Sterlingsixx
Ajax
(Here, you change ‘Arkantos’ to ‘MarakuJa’ and ‘Ajax’ to ‘Sterlingsixx’). Now you have:
MarakuJa
MarakuJa
vs
Sterlingsixx
Sterlingsixx
That’s it — you can now play a 1v1 match where both sides use the same civ!

Yes it does!
The biggest problem is that the recorded game won’t work because it’s a saved game, and recorded games don’t work with saved games. So, you’ll need to record using OBS or Streamlabs, for example, if you want to rewatch the match.
Do you want to test it with me? I’ve never done this again.
(I wonder if this is possible in AOM Retold as well.)
