Many modern games support scripting using languages like Lua. It is more convenient for modding and is much more flexible than AoE II has.

It’s not hard to embed a Lua interpreter in C++ programs (maybe AoE IV is written in C# but the case is similar). So it is not a problem if we want both performance on game and flexibility on modding. I hope they are already working on it.
