I think the Huskarl could be either shared between Goths and Saxons as a Barrack unit (Goths can already train them there after researching their UT) or used as a name for a new unit belonging to the Saxons, while the old Huskarl unit could be renamed to something from the Goth language (Huskarls were a Saxon thing)
I wish Goths would get another UU in this case.
I haven’t seen the Huskarl on any screenshot so I assume not. I think the new Saxon UU is supposed to represent the real Huskarls.
I’d like to but then people would complain about changing an OG civ when it would be enough to rename the Gothic Huskarl and name Huskarl the new Saxon unit.
I’d like to see some changes too, but we’re talking about the same team that still hasn’t managed to bring Pastures to more civs.
No, but they will receive the Varangian Guard and the longships…
I was at the point of making a topic about this. I think than the name Huskarl can be the Saxon UU name because this unit is clearly an huskarl. The actual Huskarl Goth UU can be renamed.
What new name can we use for the Gothic UU ?
Foederati could be a good name, referring to Gothic mercenaries in the Roman Empire. I prefer Huskarls remain as they are, though.
Franks were foederati too. Foederati is a Roman type of alliance
Huskarl is a word that describ a style of soldier, not a unit, so no the saxon are not getting them, they got their Hearth Troop.
A “houscarl” is basically a “house man”, so you can think of that as a Bodyguard.
They are not a specific combat style dependant, they are more doctrina dependant, abit like Swiss Mercenaries, loyal to the death, but not mercenaries as they are bodyguards.
They were more there to protect nobles rather than fighting wars, so they make no sense on the battlefield.
The Goths Huskarl is kinda different, as it’s representing an older thing, where they took the name which became what we know later as the Houscarl of the Anglo-Saxons. It’s like giving the Slav the Boyars as a UU, it’s a name for a unit represnting their style.
But maybe there will be a scenario editor unit representing a saxon Houscarl unit.
Isn’t it simply the latin word for “Federated” (Vassal) ?
The Hearth dude should be called Huskarl and the Goth Huskarl should be renamed. Huskarls were Saxon, not Goth.
But they need big axes like the Housecarls at Hastings
What are you talking about? Housecarls fought, for example, at the battles of Stamford Bridge and Hastings, why do they make no sense on the battlefield?
Gadrauhts – a Gothic term for soldier. Not very specific, but it is at least a Gothic word.
Bucellario? Not exactly great. If we borrow from the Visigoths in Spain, we could use Gardingus.
Potentially very misleading for returning players! But I’m not sold on hearth troop. It seems to be a (very rare) modern rendering of hird or hirdman, but hird and hearth aren’t etymologically related as far as I can tell.
I don’t see why they didn’t just call it hirdman, and some other options would be gesith or thegn. (Possibly also atheling, but that may be too specific.)
Oh yeah, I’m all for Hirdman!
I’m talking about the word, just make some research you’ll see.
Sorry, you’ll have to help me out here. How is doing some research into the word going to convince me that housecarls make no sense on the battlefield when I already know of some major battles that housecarls fought in?
General question to this thread: Are the saxons implemented representative for that part of land where huskarls were active?
I thought we already had a civs and units representing that.
And what civ is supposed to represent the other saxons?
If the household guards duty is to protect his employer aka the lord, why wouldn’t they fight alongside him in a battlefield?
I guess they are Teutons or Goths in-game.
