Your opinion about the zoom level

Take a look, I marked the results as positive and negative in green and red colour for you (green => zoom out good, red => zoom out bad), so you will finally find out what the MAJORITY of players ACTUALLY wants.

Your poll wasn’t optimal.
It would have been better to make 2 polls that each allow a single choice.

I don’t exactly know which 2 options you mean, probably create a 2nd poll?

Anyways 51% of the people who voted are good with the CURRENT zoom level and options, without any change and 39% like the zoom-level, but want customizable threshold options.
Only 12% want the max zoom-out reduced, but 15% want to zoom-out EVEN further.
I think the poll shows the Devs were very much on point with the “Zeitgeist”, which we say in Germany.
They knew almost everyone would love the zoom-out and the poll shows exactly that.

Probably some nice options like setting a personalized min/max zoom setting or setting predefinable levels would be nice.
I personally would like to be able to not have dynamic zoom, but only 2 levels, which I can define in the main menu.
So scrolling down would jump to setting 2 (zoomed out) and scrolling up would jump to setting 1 (zoomed in).
One for micro-ing, one for overview.
Though that’s just my personal wish and only a possible idea for the Devs.

Anyways, you have to explore the map before zoom-out helps you and the fog of war is still there.
I honestly don’t see any downside of having a massive zoom-out.
It would only make the game more strategical and less apm spammy spastic as you wouldn’t have to move your camera arround at lightning speed anymore in order to keep up with the battlefield.

The poll allows to to give contradicting replies and it also doesn’t add up to 100% so it’s harder to make a clear percentage of who want’s what.

It’s still pretty obvious what the majority wants.

The majority of people who might check out Retold play games that are far zoomed in like Starcraft II, Starcraft 1, Warcraft III, DOTA, League of Legends
any many more. During the beta test there were tons of streamers from non-Age games checking out Retold. These players all play games that are zoomed far in. The Age playerbase is a small fraction of the amount of people who will see Retold. The trailer has 2 million views and even the trailer isoomed in Even the original AoM and EE was more zoomed in that Retold. Allowing players to zoom far out makes the game look terrible and unplayable to most people. Some poll with a few dozen responders is irrelevant compared to the millions of gamers who are going to come across this game. Why is this so difficult to understand? There’s so many issues with the zoom level. It even gives you a competitive advantage while playing, which is why so many people who stream the game often zoom far out. You’ve had multiple people in this thread with way more experience than you explain to you why the zoom level is a bad thing for Retold.

Yes, I do think you should be able to cap the zoom level with a setting. The maximum zoom level should also be lowered. The current zoom level will tarnish the competitive viability of the game, and many RTS players won’t take it seriously and lose interest.

Let’s recap. Why is the far zoom out it bad? It makes the game look slow and boring to most gamers, especially since they are used to playing games which are zoomed in. Using the far zoom in Retold is not optional if you want to be competitive. Players are also forced to take advantage of it a lot of the time while playing. It’s a terrible thing to have an Retold. You are just arguing in bad faith. You know that it’s not in the best interest of the game or most players, but you choose to be selfish instead.

This has nothing to do with understanding.
We all understand what you say, we just don’t agree with it.

We do understand that you think that “millions” will hate AoMR because you can zoom out.
But just because you think that doesn’t make it true.

  1. Everyone who just plays the game has absolutely no downside whatsoever to have more zoom option. Close zoom is not removed from the game!!!
  2. It does not give you an competitive advantage to zoom out, it doesn’t get more true if you repeat it 100 times. Zooming out makes it harder to micro. Zooming out gives you a disadvantage in Ranked!

The only argument you have is basically that it look bad in Streams.
Everything else goes back to that argument.

The visual appearance of everything is subjective. There is absolutely no proof behind your arguments.
All you do is post low resolution stream screenshots.

Should we start a GoFundMe so you can afford a larger monitor and a better internet connection so you don’t need to watch 720p Streams?

Do you even know how far zoomed in you want the game.
In one thread you posted a screenshot with the game pretty zoomed out saying that that’s optimal and now you criticise AoE4 that let’s people zoom out half as much.

Just because you repeat a lie doesn’t make it a truth.

I’m well aware by now you are ignorant about the state of gaming nowadays. RTS games are practically a dead genre. Players who enjoy games like Age of Empires are such a small % of the gaming community. Retold is trying to revive the RTS genre and attract players who aren’t just Age players. Designing an RTS game where you are both able and forced to zoom far out will have disastrous consequences. It makes the game look like a joke. You know you are wrong about this, but continue to spam the same nonsense.

This is close to what the max zoom level for players should be in Retold. This is from EE.

That screenshot is way more zoomed out than AoE4 allows but you still said AoE4 failed because they increased the zoom? That makes no sense.

What you are saying about the current state of gaming makes no sense. When was the state of gaming different?
When did people think action is boring?

Age of Mythology does not play like Dota or StarCraft. Changing the gameplay would be way more likely to attract that community instead of a small minor thing like some people streaming the game a little too zoomed out.
And no you do not have to zoom out to play the game, zooming out does not give you a competitive advantage. Just because you say that doesn’t make it true.
