Zoom into 1st person

In Empire Earth the default zoom tiled the camera upwards when you got close to the ground until you eventually ended up in a 1st person like camera view on ground level. You could watch battles from the perspective of a soldier.
It blew me away 20 years ago but today the graphics are not really up to date and the fog starts very early.

What if AoMR had an option to have the same kinda of camera behaviour allowing you to watch battles from the ground level as if you were a soldier.
It would be awesome for spectators or for watching replays.

If it causes performance issues it could be disabled in ranked.

Unfortunately I couldn’t find any screenshots of the game actually being fully zoomed in and the game doesn’t run on my computer anymore.

If you zoom in a little more the camera full tilts horizontal and to horizon is in the middle of the screen.

By the way:

Anyway,

BoasterToaster, on Reddit, replied and said this, "I tried to mod this sort of thing into single player skirmish a few times with the original AoM and AoE3. It worked okay, but the engine doesn’t have a LOD system to reduce the processor hit of too many objects in the background. If you end up seeing too much of the map at once, you’re in for a ton of lag.

Cinimatics and trailers can do it by limiting the map size, but that wouldn’t work reliably for regular gameplay. Not saying it’s impossible, but it would require some pretty big updates to the game engine.

I would absolutely love this as a feature though."

Hopefully maybe the developers will have this feature enabled especially for those who have higher end rigs that are capable of actually using it.

Ok my suggestion sounds similar to yours but I want it be a zoom feature.
Basically you as an alternative to the current zoom behaviour.

The default zoom behaviour from Empire Earth 1 where the camera tilted into 1st person when you fully zoomed in.

Unfortunately I couldn’t find a picture or video of it since the game was release long before youtube and a lot of people talk about mods that allow you to zoom out more since the game had a very restrictive zoom level for a game dealing with air combat and long range artillery.

Empire Earth also allowed you to follow an unit by pressing the period key iirc.

A bunch of RTS have a hotkey that allows you to follow a unit, or allows you to hold the command group key to keep following the group.

Which indeed works nicely with the 1st person camera and also the ability to rotate the view that AoMR added.

wow empire earth seems to be really popular here, so popular i feel sad i never played it (i assume that was around the time i was addicted to rise of nations. maybe we will see a new empire earth in the next 10 years who knows then i surely play it.

about the camera and 1st person: i highly support this and would love to see/do this not only cause i am a guy who enjoys camera modes in games and like to use them, but also cause i think AoMR is so pretty it really shouldn’t be shy to get zoomed in on. just imagine making a screenshot from the perspective of a peltast who a colossus or hydra smashes a wall infront of the unit!

which brings me no another idea (which might be hard to do or could be added later but would add even more to 1st person shots): finishers! imagine a five headed hydra tear apart a poor soldier infront “you”. that could be a pretty brutal but also amazing perspective. (maybe less brutal since we don’t have blood - yet)

Those two games were popular around the same time and kinda had similar concepts.
Empire Earth is a lot more like AoE though.

Unfortunately it doesn’t run on modern systems anymore, at last I wasn’t able to get it running on Windows 10 even with trying to install some old graphics tools.
Haven’t even tried it on Windows 11 yet.

The screenshot mode will likely allow you to do that already.

Reminds me of the first Dawn of War. Amazing game. I never liked DoW2 or 3 though.

Those are some images I just took from Empire Earth: The Art of Conquest

I wish you had different kind of crops from farms that would be planted like there is in Empire Earth The Art of Conquest with 5 different kinds. Would also be cool if a new civilization had a hero that inspired other units boosting their morale making them harder to kill when nearby. If they had made Romans instead of Atlanteans we could of seen some great Wonders like The Colosseum for example.

I hope we have a developer that can comment on the first person view for gameplay and spectator mode. It would be a bummer if the first person camera angle is ignored.

They confirmed that it will have the same photo mode as AoE3DE.
I haven’t used that much but it allows you to go into that kinda perspective.
Just only on a paused game I think.

It’s only on pause.

It would be even better if it was LIVE, too.
Better thumbnails, better immersion, better everything. Hopefully they bring it back to their game engineers so they can figure it out and give the players the option to do first person view LIVE.
