Zoom out excessively on AOM Retold

I particularly like the classic Aom, played on Voobly, where the zoom is not so open.

I believe the game becomes more dynamic and exciting.

Note that when I played AOMEE I didn’t have a good visual and gameplay experience for this reason. I even tried zooming in from AOM voobly to AOMEE and see if you can get a close experience, but I didn’t.

In AOM Retold I see that the zoom out is high and you can see a large part of the map, the figures are small, it is easy to know where they are being invaded or having problems.

I worry about being disappointed that I won’t have the great experience I had when I played AOM 2002.

What is your point of view on the matter?

no reason for this concern. Even on EE people are able to play at this really “open / higher” camera or with the standart zoom.
Retold is same engine that AoE 3 DE where you can zoom into units ####### lol

Not sure what you are trying to argue.
Do you not like to zoom out a lot?
Zoom is a slider. Most people don’t play AoE2DE/AoE3DE fully zoomed out nor fully zoomed in. The word zoom itself implies that the distance is a variable and not fixed.

The big difference between your 2002 experience and now is that you will very likely have a way larger monitor with a way higher resolution.
Most people have 1080p (FullHD) monitors by now and a not insignificant number of people has 1440p (WGHD) or even 2160p (4K/UHD) with 24" or larger being a common screen size.
That is very different from resolutions like 640x480 on a 14" CRT monitor like many people had in 2002.

So depending on your monitor the units are more pixels on the screen and physically larger in your field of view despite being more zoomed out because your monitor is just that much larger.

Yes, in AoE 3 DE you have the ultra zoom, and you can super zoom out the camera or see the units super close…

True, at that time we had tube monitors and HD didn’t even exist, now we even have 4K monitors and multiscreens…

I think I wasn’t clear, but what I meant to say is that I see that a zoom out limit that isn’t too open would make the game more fun from my point of view, because:

The relatively small zoom out of the classic AOM, in my opinion, makes the game move faster, requires a greater APM to be successful, in addition to paying more attention to other resources such as the map itself.
When the zoom out is more open, which is what happened in AOM EE, the game seems to lose speed and consequently emotion.

I say this because of the following, a more open zoom, I can be more competitive, as I have easier information and require less other perceptions, however if I zoom in similar to what I used in the classic aom, which is the maximum zoom out than the The game allowed, in addition to not having the same experience that I had, the gameplay reduces the level as the opponent will be using the advantages that the maximum zoom out or close to it provides, sacrificing fun for competitiveness.

It’s frustrating to see the entire field of view of your base and not be surprised by an enemy attack, just like it happens for experienced players who play on Voobly.

I like that there is the option to change the zoom, however my concern is for the competitive part, for example I cannot watch a stream with the highest zoom, it makes me super boring and it could be that pro players decide to use this as their main so as not to lose advantage against the rest.

Very simply, I and many other don’t want options to be taken away from us because there is a small number of people that want everything to be playing the game in their particular inefficient way.

When Starcraft 2 was released there where people complaining that you can now select more then 12 units at once and that the game is therefor ruined because their skill of being able to control large armies 12 units at the time is now useless.

The majority enjoys playing the game with a better overview and not just zoomed in on a tiny part of the map.
It is an unnecessary handicap.

Yes, I think the ultrazoom will be great for AoMR…

I personally like playing Supreme Commander, in that game you can zoom out so far that you can see the whole map.
You essentially don’t need a minimap anymore. Just zoom out and back in wherever you want. Basically like using Google Maps.

The game as an LOD system where units get replaced by low poly models first and then eventually just by icons.

Well, but Sup Commander was already a massive zoom, the minimap was directly the game map xd…
