I also have this issue and made a bug about it here
Would be really nice if Relic made the game respect the OS settings.

if you use nvidia, right click on a empty space in desktop, select nvdia tool. Select 3d settings. Then select program settings. Find Aoe4 inside the programs list and force it to whatever gpu you want to use.
Hey all. I’ve logged this so the team can check it out. I recommend contacting support here with your DxDiag and warnings.log file.
You are an egghead. He clearly stated that the 2nd GPU which keeps overheating is not for gaming, which is why he wants the game to use his other GPU.
The fact that his 2nd GPU is reaching 105-degrees is another problem altogether and it’s not what the OP wants to address. What he wants to address is how to tell the game to use his main GPU.
Stop replying if all you want to do is pompously sit on a high horse and spout out answers to questions nobody asked.
Well this still hasn’t been fixed… Will it be resolved before 2025 ![]()
well aoe4 uses essence engine, which does in fact have SLI support built in since COH 2 i believe at least, so the game spreading on both cards doesn’t suprise me
i’d like to hear which specs the gpu 1 and 2 are tho, as its much trickier with 2 different cards, or 1 nvidia 1 amd card setup
found a solution that doesn’t require bios hacks or anything super hard.
Open Device Manager,
expand “Display Adaptors”
right click your intel/amd (integrated gpu)
select “Disable”
screen will flicker and look awful (don’t worry)
Launch and open AOE IV.
game will run terrible but will be using your dedicated GPU as its the “only” GPU can confirm this in task manager.
alt tab back to device manager.
right click on your intel/amd (integrated gpu)
select “Enable”
now your screen will flicker again but look good and your game won’t lag and it will continue to use your dedicated graphics.
enjoy AOE IV with your dedicated gpu as it was meant to be.
I was able to go from low settings to high settings and get very decent fps now.
Sadly… you have to do this EVERY TIME YOU LAUNCH AOE IV, this is BEYOND STUPID MICROSOFT!!!
Hello,
Thank you for your reply, unfortunately this solution doesn’t work for me because I want to have my blender render run on the second gpu and play the game on my main 1st gpu.
It is clear by now that Microsoft just doesn’t care. I will be building my next pc with only one gpu for this reason.
Thx for trying ![]()
Disabling one of my gpus in device manager works for me as well but this is clearly not a solution. I don’t want to disable one gpu every time I play aoe4. Microsoft needs to fix this issue! AOE4 is clearly not optimized for multiple gpus.
I just had an email exchange with the support team. AOE4 does not support multiple gpus. The best thing to do is just disable one gpu in device manager every time you are playing which sucks!
